Deciding to buy an LED screen, many are faced with a choice problem. What is better modules with DIP or SMD LEDs? Each of the technologies has its own characteristics, taking into account which it becomes much easier to choose the best option.
Features of the construction of DIP and SMD LEDs
DIP LED is a semiconductor crystal placed in a kind of "bulb" made of transparent material. At the bottom of the diode there are "legs" - the cathode and anode, which are placed in the board and sealed. And so that the contacts do not suffer from moisture, after soldering the connections, sealant is poured. A microchip located in the same "bulb" controls the glow of the diode. To compose a pixel, 3 DIP LEDs are needed as each of them only glows in one color. Although there are 3in1 DIP diodes, they are rarely used due to their unreliability.
The main difference between SMD diodes is that 3 semiconductors of different colors are installed in them at once. In addition, they do not have "legs", and they are fixed on the board by direct soldering or using special compounds.
When is DIP the best choice?
SMD technology is considered more modern and in demand. But there are a number of cases where it is wiser to use DIP modules. This is due to certain qualities of the DIP LEDs.
Excellent visibility of the glow at a long distance is ensured by the special shape of the lens - the upper part of the "bulb" of the LED. Due to the small scattering angle, the beam is narrowly directed, and therefore the information on such a screen will be clearly distinguishable from a great distance.
The sealant, which is poured over the surface of the board, makes the modules with DIP-diodes especially resistant to moisture.
Another advantage is the absence of strong heating during operation, which is typical for SMD LEDs. And the power consumption of DIPs is lower, and significantly.
However, it should be borne in mind that the entire DIP-module will be larger, since the features of fixing the diodes require a more massive case. Although for an outdoor screen, this will be more likely a plus, because a solid case makes the module more resistant to mechanical and climatic influences.
All this makes DIP-LEDs the best choice when ordering traffic and information boards. It is for such screens that excellent visibility in difficult road conditions and resistance to bad weather are especially important. With proper operation, the service life of a street display made of DIP modules will be longer than that of an analogue based on SMD diodes.
