Nowadays, school education plays a vital role in modern society, and schools offer broad curricula to their students. Some people claim that it would be desirable to teach high schoolers only the disciplines they want, whereas others do not share this opinion.
As for me, I support the above statement. First of all, people between 15 and 17 years of age usually know what occupation they will choose after finishing school. Therefore, it makes no sense to deepen knowledge in the fields they will not need in the future. On the contrary, they must focus on the subjects that may be useful for their career. What is more, students are better motivated if they have the opportunity to choose the subjects that seem interesting to them. Studying boring things makes the educational process ineffective.
However, there are people who think differently. They are firmly convinced that students in high school should receive comprehensive education. A narrow scope of the curriculum prevents them from exploring diverse branches of science and becoming well-educated people.
I cannot agree with the opponents’ position. High school education is not sufficient to make people experts in every field of knowledge, which is impossible in principle because every person is supposed to specialize in a particular area during their lifetime.
To sum up, I would like to say again that the opportunity to study only the subjects to their taste may help high school students to concentrate on their future employment and increase the quality of knowledge.
