Chapter 1
Here We Go Again
"Manuel ?" Mama called his name as soon as she hung up the phone. " Where are you ?".
" What is it, Mama?" Manuel asked coming out of his room.
Mama searched the kitchen cupboards while she talked. "That was Grandma on the phone. We are going to her house on Sunday".
"Why?" asked Manuel, and he sat down at the kitchen table. He had a sudden sinking feeling in his stomach.
"Your uncle Pablo is visiting, so we are having a big family party at Grandma's." Mama put ingredients on the counter. " I'll make my special almond and orange cake."
Manuel said "Cool", but that's not what he was thinking.
Manuel's mother kept talking while she searched for her special cake recipe.
"Antonio and Elma are definitely coming to the party, and so are their kids. Oh, and I need to make sure Gabriela knows!"
But Manuel wasn't listening. Family get togethers used to be fun, but lately Manuel didn't enjoy them. Plus this party on Sunday meant missing out on baseball with his buddies.
" I wish I didn't have to go", thought Manual, but he didn't say anything to Mama. She was so excited about seeing your family.
"Can I use phone, Mama? " Manual asked. "I need to tell Vincent I won't be at baseball on Sunday."
"Sure", said Mama. She was still thinking about baking the cake.
Manual took the phone and dialed Vincent's number as he walked back to his room.
"Hey!" said Vincent, "How is it going?".
Manual sighed. "Not great - I can't come to baseball this week because I have to go to a big family thing at my Grandma's place".
Vincent replied "Wow, that sounds cool".
"You are joking" Manual scoffed. "All everyone does at this family things is tell the same old stories and then look at old photos. But Mama will be upset if I say I don't want to go".
"Maybe it'll be better that you think" said Vincent. "I will see you later".
"Okay, bye". Manuel was puzzled. Did Vincent really mean that the party sounded cool? Maybe he was just being sarcastic by saying the opposite of what he thought.
