Saint Valentine’s Day is celebrated annually on the 14th of February. It is extremely popular in numerous countries and has become an important celebration of romance and love. Heart-shaped chocolates, roses, jewellery, small gifts in red boxes, sweets, teddy bears and valentine cards are symbols of this holiday.
Actually there are a lot of legends connected with this day and two of them are quite interesting. Of course, nobody knows anything for sure, because it was long long time ago.
- So, the first legend.
Imagine the Roman Empire. They had a celebration in the middle of February in honour of the god Lupercus, who was responsible for the crops. But then something went wrong or time passed and the Romans started to admire another god called Juno. Actually it was a goddess and she was women’s goddess responsible for marriage. The celebration looked as following. Girls wrote their names on paper and put them in the box. Men took papers with names from the box and… Wow! Destiny! Since then we celebrate Love Day on the 14th of February.
- The second legend seems more interesting from my point of view.
Again the Roman Empire. One of the emperors whose name was Claudius wanted a powerful army and didn’t want his soldiers to get married. He prohibited his soldiers to have families. But there was a priest called Valentine who felt pity for soldiers and their beloved women and married them secretely. Catastrophe! Of course, the Emperor got to know about that and the priest was put into prison. There he met a daughter of a jailer who was blind. They fell in love with each other. By the way, Valentine had some extraordinary powers and cured the poor girl. She could see again. Or was It a power of his love? Anyway the couple exchanged notes regularly and the last night before the execution the loving priest left her the last note saying “Your Valentine”. He was executed on the 14th of February.
