"The exhibition is designed to introduce visitors to an extremely interesting phenomenon, which has been called Egyptomania since the end of the XVIII century. Among the numerous historicisms and orientalisms, only the fascination with Ancient Egypt has earned the name "mania". In contrast to the rather short-lived fashions for oriental exoticism (like, for example, Chinatown and the Chinoiserie style generated by it), Egyptomania is incredibly long-lasting. Its roots go back to ancient Greece and Rome, so elements of this hobby are present in European culture at all stages of its history. Another reason for its popularity is that Egyptomania is a universal phenomenon, covering various aspects of life: architecture, fine and applied arts, philosophy and mysticism, literature, theater, cinema and even the simplest household items. Another important idea of the exhibition is that it was in the depths of Egyptomania that scientific Egyptology slowly matured and eventually formed."
