Reasons For Doing Sports

By Olga M., a school student.

Task:
Imagine that you are doing a project on why young people do sports in Zetland. You have found some data on the subject –– the results of the opinion polls ( see the pie chart below)
Comment on the data in the pie chart and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Write 200-250 words. Use the following plan:
make an opening statement on the subject of the project;
select and report 2-3 facts;
make 1-2 comparisons where relevant and give your comments;
outline a problem that can arise if people do not do sports,  and suggest a way of solving it;
conclude by giving and explaining your opinion on the importance of sports in the life of young people.

It is a well-known fact that there is a wide range of motivations for doing sports. I am currently working on an important project on why young people do sports in Zetland. I have found some relevant statistics given in the form of a pie chart. I will analyse it in the following essay.

Overall, the diagram compares five reasons for why young people do sports, as a percentage. Looking at the data, I can highlight two main facts. The highest priority among the respondents is losing weight, with the figure of 35%. In contrast to it, the least priority is improving health, as only 10% of the respondents selected it.

Looking closely at the data, I want to compare interesting details in connection with reasons for doing sports. For example, while "getting rid of stress" is a very common choice, "following parents’ advice" is far less popular. The figures are 25% for the former and 11% for the latter. I assume that young people in Zetland are mostly independent and find their own reason for exercising rather than just use their parents’ advice.

A potential problem that can arise with not doing sports is inevitable health deterioration caused by a sedentary lifestyle. However, I can suggest a practical solution to this issue. In order to stay healthy people can try walking daily, eating nutritious food and taking short breaks from their work.

To sum up, I want to say that it is crucial for young people to do sports. By that, not only do they invest in their health, but also they fill their bodies and minds with energy.
