Opening of the Alley of Angels

The initiative to open the memorial belonged to the initiative group of the Donetsk City Volunteer Center represented by Chairman Dmitry Chernyshev, who on behalf of the center proposed to perpetuate the memory of children who died during the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine. This proposal received the unanimous support of all members of the city administration, including the head of Donetsk Igor Martynov.

The press service of the Donetsk city administration, represented by the head of Vladimir Koehler, held a competition, which was unanimously won by the project of Donetsk blacksmith Viktor Mikhalev. Financing of the project was carried out both at the expense of private donations, and at the expense of enterprises such as LLC "SpecIzdat" (DNR), LLC "Alfatek" (Russia).

The park square near the children's Small Railway was chosen as the place of installation of the original memorial sign. A playground was set up, paving slabs were laid and on May 3, 2015, a memorial slab of red Tokov granite was installed, on which the inscription "Alley of Angels" was embossed in gold letters. In memory of the dead children of Donbass". The memorial was opened on May 5, 2015.

After the manufacture of the main memorial complex, a wrought-iron arch with a height of 2.5 and a width of 2 meters was installed. The arch consists of roses (the symbol of Donetsk), large-caliber machine gun casings are interwoven between the roses, as well as pigeons as a symbol of peace, which the population of the region aspires to. Under the arch there is a granite slab, where the names of the deceased children and their ages are stamped in alphabetical order, the two youngest of them are less than a year old.

Now the arch and the plate with the names have been moved to Victory Park, the "Palace of Pioneers" of the Kalininsky district, along Shevchenko Boulevard.

In 2015, the project "Miru Mir" ("Piece to the world") was organized in the Russian Federation, within the framework of which children of Russia and Europe drew sketches of a commemorative sculpture for children of Donbass. Russian sculptor Denis Seleznev, based on a model created by high school students of Moscow school No. 1100 together with children from Germany, created a sculptural group in memory of the children of Donbass. In the sculptural composition, the boy looks at the sky, covering his younger sister. The composition was installed on the Alley of Angels and opened on June 2, 2017. The opening was attended by guests from Germany and Italy. After the opening, the monument was consecrated by the clergy of St. Nicholas Church in Donetsk. In the final part of the event, a prayer service was held for the establishment of peace in the Donbas.

Use to support the war with Ukraine

After the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, videos in support of the war with Ukraine began to be widely distributed on the Internet. In most of the videos, the influencers unprovenly mention the eight-year-long "genocide" in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine. Ticktockers repeat Putin's call for an invasion of Ukraine by the end of February 2022. Russian influencers almost verbatim repeat the same text condemning Ukraine for the murder of children. The videos include almost identical phrases such as "Everyone blames Russia, but turns a blind eye that Donbass has been under fire for eight years" and "Russia wants to bring peace." The Alley of Angels is often mentioned, it is claimed that hundreds of innocent children were killed in the Donbas, and shelling of civilians continues. The identity of the texts indicates the coordination or assignment of abstracts for Russian video bloggers. Most of the videos have since been deleted, but some can still be found online. Given the suspicious similarity of these videos, they may well be part of Russian propaganda. Many TikTok users claim that they were offered payment for posting such videos, and that the Russian government bribes influencers to publish videos and convince young people of the correctness of a military invasion.

The media project "Like This" noted that according to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion in mid-July 2022, at least 338 children have died from Russian shelling, mostly in the Donetsk region, while 66 children's names have been stamped on the granite slab of the Alley of Angels used in propaganda.

Facts

Every year on the International Children's Day, celebrated on June 1, flower-laying and mourning rallies dedicated to the memory of the dead children of Donbass are held at the memorial.
