Russian State Uniform Exam on English ( EGE-23) vs Zetland? Where is the connection?

Why do Russian school students have to think and write about preferences among people who live in Zetland?

I don’t want to be distorted. I haven’t taken any exceptions to the lexicographer either. But I must understand the reason for not addressing Russian areas in writing tasks that require students to make their reasoning upon residents’ habits, choices, duties, etc. For instance, in the following task, school EGE takers have to express their “whys” on the roots and causes of figures. Let's take the fact that 22% of Zetland people who opted to study literature in order to escape from daily routines. How would eleventh graders fantasise on this matter? Do they have to study the history of Zetland on all aspects of life from home chores to lofty matters? Just to add, what Zetland is it, in question? That, which is an inner-city area of Sydney, or that, the name of which was changed into Shetland in 1974, the northest part of Scotland? Oh dear! I can’t find the answer.

However I’m trying to create a sample answer to the task given below. I’m curious about my readers’ opinions on my version.

Task 38.2 has been retrieved from a demo version located on the FIPI website

Imagine that you are doing a project on [*the issue of] why people in Zetland should study literature. You have found some data on the subject --- the results of the opinion polls (see the pie chart below).

Comment on the data in the pie chart and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Write 200-250 words

Use the following plan:

  • make an opening statement on the subject of the project;
  • select and report 2-3 facts;
  • make 1-2 comparisons where relevant and give your comments;
  • outline a problem that one can face studying literature and suggest a way of solving it;
  • conclude by giving and explaining your opinion on the importance of studying literature

Effectively, people have various motivations for studying literature. Working on the project with regard to why people in Zetland should study literature, I have found statistics which I will elaborate in my essay.

Basically, the statistics represent a breakdown of five purposes for studying literature in Zetland. The results of the survey indicate two main facts. First, most people (38%) say they should study literature to push the boundaries of knowledge. Second, the least number of respondents (10%) turn to literature because they are keen on discussing books with friends.

As is seen from the pie chart, there are twice as many people (22%) who imagine literature as a means of escaping from routine, compared with the number of enthusiasts (10%) for discussing books with friends, besides, both activities are nothing short of pastimes. However, the survey also illustrates a higher proportion of people (38% ) with the objective to widen horizons. I suppose that literature experts are in high demand in Zetland, which can inform people’s choices for deepening knowledge.

I think students can face some problems when studying literature, such as misunderstanding writers' ideas. This might refer to the shortage of top-tier humanitarians who could help students develop the perception of literary images better. I believe, national ministries of education should provide a sufficient number of methodological pieces of guidance for teachers of literature to improve the situation.

To conclude, I am convinced that reading is one of the most worthwhile occupations in the world. Literature enriches people's knowledge and develops their intellectual faculties, which stands them a good stead later in life.
