Volunteering in Kamchatka

Since 2011, a volunteer program has been operating in the Kronotsky Nature Reserve. Volunteers participate in household work on the cordons of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve and the South Kamchatka Nature Reserve, clear and mark trails, help researchers in collecting field materials, participate in repair and construction work, take photos and videos, help in souvenir shops and perform many other tasks. And they also live in places where tourists can only get to for a couple of hours, watch wild animals, go hiking and keep their own diaries.

To apply for volunteering, you must respond the following conditions:

➻The age of the volunteer is from 18 years

➻The minimum period of work in protected areas is 3 weeks

➻Physically and mentally healthy people are invited to work

➻Volunteers independently get to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

➻Volunteers independently provide themselves with personal equipment, clothing, first aid kit, life and health insurance

Starting from 2022, in order to become a volunteer of the Kronotsky nature reserve, you need to complete distance learning at the school of nature defenders under the program "Training Of Environmental Volunteers".

It's important for understanding what role the help plays in the complex process of nature protection and what the nature reserve business looks like.

The students will study fundamentals of nature conservation, rules of behavior in the wild, observations of wild animals, ecological tourism in the Kamchatka Territory and others and only after passing the exam they will be avoid to be the volunteers.

The courses are held online several times a month throughout the year.

In order to apply for volunteering, you need to go to the official website of the Kronovsky reserve and fill out a questionnaire or write to the organizers in the VK.

As you can see on the photo there're mainly good reviews.

They all are in Russian, so here I've translated some:

Pros:

The opportunity to see a unique natural area for a long time.

Cons:

Hard work, the impossibility of traveling around the neighborhood without an escort

Talking personally, I would definitely like to try volunteering in Kamchatka not only because of goog reviews. For me the main things are exciting landscapes, the opportunity to make friends, seeing a lot of new things and finding out a little more about my country. Of course the need of studying a lot is repulsive, but it does not block my enthusiasm. Unfortunately, before I'll be able to try my best I need to wait untill I'll be 18.
