We would like to tell you about besieged Leningrad. Besiege of Leningrad started in 8th September of 1941 and ended 872 days later 27th January of 1944.
The war developed fast, and already in early September, the city found itself in a complete ring, surrounded by Fascist invaders. The only branch connecting Leningrad with the country was the route through Lake Ladoga – the Road of Life. Hitler, commanding this operation, called it "Barbarossa", and Georgy Zhukov was appointed commander on the Soviet side. After the encirclement, the Germans began shelling the city, especially wanted to destroy the food warehouses, and they quickly managed to do it.
The city could not feed everyone. The norms for the release of bread and other products began to decrease rapidly and reached minimum values at the end of November, when employees and dependents received only 125 grams of bread per day. Mass starvation began and as a result — starvation deaths and even cannibalism.
In addition to famine and bombing, another enemy, frosts, fell on the Leningraders. The winter of 1941-1942 was the most frosty and difficult during the operation. For all the years of surveillance in the city. People were freezing in masse; more than 7 thousand wooden houses were even put on firewood.
Despite the terrible conditions, the Leningraders were able to survive, and already in 1942 the city was fully supplied with food, a tram was launched and much more was done. Factories continued to work steadily, tanks and other weapons were produced. The city withstood, and on January 27, 1944, the blockade was lifted. Soon, the first train was already launched into the besieged city.
