Sonora Smart Dodd, the daughter of an American Civil War veteran, thought fathers should have a day, such as Mother's Day. Dodd's father raised her six children alone in the absence of their mother. He began work to declare His father's birthday, June 5, Father's Day, but the celebrations were postponed to the third Sunday of June, unable to reach that date.
Father's Day was first celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. In 1924, United States President Calvin Coolidge supported the celebrations; but he hasn't officially declared Father's Day.
In 1966, then-president Lyndon Johnson issued a statement announcing that the third market of June would be celebrated as Father's Day each year. In 1972, father's day, signed by President Richard Nixon, was legally declared a public holiday in the United States.
Catholics, on the other hand, celebrate a different history as Father's Day. They took this celebration from a religious point of view and commemorated the father of the Christian prophet Jesus, on the 19th century of March.
