Statements were approved on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory in the Great Patriotic War, on confirmation of adherence to the goals and principles of the UN Charter, on solidarity and mutual assistance in the fight against coronavirus infection (COVID-19), as well as on support for the UN Secretary General's appeal for a global ceasefire in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic
On May 26, 2020, a regular meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Collective Security Treaty Organization was held in a video conference, chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov. For the first time, the CSTO Crisis Response Center was involved in the Ministerial Council. The meeting was attended by CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas.
The Ministers thoroughly discussed the state and prospects for the development of the international and regional situation and its impact on the security of the Organization’s member states with a focus on CSTO peacekeeping and the development prospects of the CSTO Partnering and Observing institutions.
Considering the situation with the spread of coronavirus infection in the world, an exchange of views took place regarding possible threats associated with the pandemic.
The CSTO Secretary General said that despite the obvious need to consolidate international efforts to overcome the unprecedented challenge of the coronavirus pandemic, the global situation today, unfortunately, was characterized by a further aggravation of the negative confrontational trends that dominated on the eve of its appearance. “And attempts to prevent the dismantling of the basic agreements that have ensured a balance of forces and stability on its basis in recent decades are practically blocked,” Stanislav Zas said.
Priority attention upon the discussion was also paid to the cooperation of the Collective Security Treaty Organization with the CIS and the SCO, as well as to additional opportunities for the development of interaction between them.
Draft statements were reviewed and approved on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory in the Great Patriotic War, on confirmation of adherence to the goals and principles of the UN Charter, on solidarity and mutual assistance in the fight against coronavirus infection (COVID-19), as well as on support for the UN Secretary General's appeal for a global ceasefire in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ministers also approved the draft Decision of the CSTO Collective Security “On the allocation of quota positions in the Collective Security Treaty Organization Secretariat” for the coming period for submission to the CSC of the Organization.
The draft Decision of the CSTO Ministerial Council “On the Plan of Consultations of Representatives of the CSTO Member States on Foreign Policy, Security and Defense for the Second Half of 2020 - the First Half of 2021” was approved.
The signing of these documents will be carried out individually.
In general, the past meeting of the CSTO Ministerial Council confirmed the closeness of the positions of the Organization’s member states on the issues of strengthening international and regional security, their readiness to increase mutual efforts to achieve these goals.
