Time to time I bake pizzelles. Pizzelles are traditional Italian waffle cookies, as Google says.
I like them. They are easy to make, remind me Russian waffles and go very well with coffee at work.
Every time when I think of them, I remember a funny story happened to me.
In 2016, my husband and I flew to Florida to visit his father and aunt. We stayed at hotel La Quinta with Breakfast “included”.
In the morning we went down to the dining room, a pretty large room with a buffet service. There were two waffle-makers. I have never seen such a waffle iron and did not use. My husband also did not use it, because he does not like waffles, and therefore could not help me.
Near the waffle iron, a large man was baking waffles. At first, I had a question: is he a cook or a tourist? I suggested, that he was a tourist, but he knew what he was doing. I asked him to show how to use the waffle iron and he did:
- take a small plastic (perhaps measuring) Cup,
- type in the dough, put the dough in the waffle iron,
- close it,
- turn and
- after a while the waffle is ready.
I thanked him and repeated: I took the same Cup, which he showed me with and echoed for him the entire process.
As I was baking my waffle, I saw this man taking A new measuring Cup and continuing to bake his waffles. I stood and thought about myself “OMG! I took away his measuring Cup and did not even disdain! So, silly and embarrassing!”. I baked my waffle and ran away to the husband’s table. That’s what it means to have no experience of traveling abroad.
Going back to Pizzelles
One day the mother of the sister-in-law presented me a box with the Prego Pizzelle baker and told that most likely it will be useful to me. I appreciate the attention of my husband’s relatives to my humble person and accepted the box with gratitude. I looked through the instructions from the box, realized that it was something like a waffle iron, I found my Russian dough recipe, and I did not succeed.
But you know that the Russians do not give up so easily. My husband often says he’s glad his wife is so Stubborn. So, the very next day I baked a lot of Pizzelles.
Recipe:
3 eggs
¾ cup sugar
½ cup butter or margarine, melted and cooled
1 tsp. vanilla (optional)
½ tsp. anise (optional)
1 ¾ cup flour
2 tsp. baking powder
In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs and sugar. Add the cooked butter or margarine, vanilla and anise, sift the flour and baking powder together and add to the egg mixture. The batter should be stiff enough to be dropped by spoon. The batter can also be refrigerated to be used later.
I like them flat, but you can wrap in a cone and even put ice cream inside. You can sprinkle them with powdered sugar for beauty.
I wish you the new travels and new dishes! Don’t forget to make a wish every time you try something new!
