The government has identified 55 drugs that hospitals in India need to manage coronavirus patients in intensive care units. It has also prepared a separate list of 97 essential drugs required during the three months from April to June, including key antibiotics, vasopressors, emergency cardiac drugs, pain relievers, muscle relaxants, nebulisation and anti-epileptic medicines.
The Drug Controller General of India has asked state drug controllers to take ‘proactive steps’ so that India doesn’t run out of essential medicines during the time of crisis. The Directorate General of Health Services, the technical wing of the ministry of health and family welfare, reviewed India’s requirements and prepared the lists, which were submitted to the DCGI.
India needs emergency cardiac drugs, sedatives, antibiotics, anti-epileptic medicines and IV fluids for ICU management. The essential drugs, according to the list, include paracetamol, ibuprofen, diclofenac, albendazole, azithromycin, ofloxacin, carbamazepine and hormones. “You have been requested to take all proactive steps to meet the stated objectives to ensure availability of drugs,” the DCGI said in the letter to the state drug controllers, referring to the two lists of medicines...
