Hello everyone! This is the long-awaited osu!lazer review!
A client update which has been in development for several years now
and will probably last a couple more
The update everyone's looking forward to so much
and waiting for the release
Until then, beta version is available at github
The link is in the description
We already have something to comment on
In this video I will tell you which changes I liked
and what new features will be available for the players
If you like the video please like it and subscribe to my channel
This would be your best gift for me
Thanks for watching
The client development started in 2015
and it was supposed to be released in 2016
However the team faced some serious challenges
and decided to rewrite the client from scratch
on a new engine
which sounds pretty smart
since the new client has unlimited potential
More on this later in the video
Lazer is not a name for a new game
but is just a code name for the project
Osu!lazer is a big update for the game
Technically lazer was released in 2017
but is only available as a preview version
currently it' still work in progress
the client is not optimized yet enough
the compatibility checks are being done
and other features such as editor
which is a core and final stage of the lazer development
One of the developers predicts the project
to be released
in 2021
Don't jump on this though, it's just his opinion
Since I am now finished with the introduction
Let's move on to the review of osu!lazer itself
The very first login gives the impression
that you have entered a greatly modified version of osu!
Once you start the game
you are greeted with a new title
screen and music
When you see it for the first time, you are like:
"wow"
By clicking on this sacred circle
we get access to the section we are used to
Play, Edit, Settings, Exit
and a new button for osu!direct
For those who don't know the direct button exists in stable
but is visible only for osu!supporters
In my opinion osu!direct in stable in its current form sucks
Honestly I don't even use it often
Lazer's direct is actually quite convenient
and uses the same UI as on the newest website
This is exactly what's needed
since for the longest time I have been searching for maps not in direct
but on the website
I had to find it first
download it and alt-tab back
many redundant clicks
this is inconvenient
I think that adding web components
is the best solution for making the client
independent of the website
Not only it has beatmap search
Many features which were available only on the website
will be in the client as well
Such as profiles, player leaderboards, changelogs
beatmap information
This makes our lives a lot easier
Now to find the information you need
You don't have to open the browser, go to the website and find the correct place
Just lick the correct section on the panel and that's it!
For the sake of completion I would add a news section
Where you can check new featured artists,
what's happening in the community, information about new events etc.
That would be nice
Aside from that I was really happy about the design
This looks modern and clean
stylish and simply pretty
various animations and transitions
Everything looks lively as opposed to static
In the beginning you will want to move around a lot due to nice transition animations
This is satisfying and pleasant to watch
when your actions are followed by such a feedback
It's clear that a lot of effort was put in the smallest details
such as clearing text, mod change animations, mod icons and many more
By the way the frequency of the jumping is proportional to the bpm of the playing song
This is so funny
Let's talk more about the design
I would like to repeat that it's nice that various icons and panels got smaller
because it provides a sense of area and tidiness
so that your panels are not 1/4 of your screen
like it used to be but on the borders
In the field of view
I won't talk much about the design though since I am not an expert
One last thing I would like to add is
I think the new song selection menu is nice
The background is blurred
which hint the main map colours
throughout the whole monitor by using transparent panels
and a small panel with full BG for 1/6 of the screen
with the map stats
which is clearly visible
In stable half of the background is covered by the song selection
As I said it looks modern clean and stylish
And even these neon lights give an impression that you are playing a game of the future
while cars are flying in the window
Peppy's decision to make the game open-source reveals many possibilities
For example, skinning will go to the whole new level
You will be able to change not only pictures
but HUD elements position
For example if you dislike the song selection on the right
you will be able to move it to the left side of the screen
or make a horizontal carousel of maps
leaderboards and map stats to the right
If you however can code
The whole UI is at your disposal
Aside from new skins we will see new ranked mods
we have a couple of fun mods for now
which are met with mixed feelings
Some like none
Some find a couple of favourites
Others like all of them
However I find it difficult to understand how you can like spin mode
In this mod instead of regular approach circles
Note appears like this
When the note approaches its normal form
You should click
It's a good idea to try to replace regular approach circles with something else
but I disliked this mod a lot
On the other hand, in Growth
and delight, it's done a lot better
The notes grow and shrink
like balloons
and it looks a lot better
If I were to choose my favourite mods
I would take wind up
and wind down
An alternative to ranked Double Time
You don't play the whole map on 1.5x here but
at a progressively increasing speed
or decreasing, depending on the mod
It's extremely fun the first time
This mod has a different AR all the time
This is one of the lazer tricks
Earlier this was only possible through invisible notes
and storyboard
just like most other new mods
You can remember this from Aspire
Remember the map Aleph-0
It has a stream pattern
this pattern consists of approaching notes
You now have a mod "Transform"
where patterns are appearing in the same way
and it really looks epic
There is also a mod "Wiggle"
In this mod your notes shake as much as you do while FCing Harumachi Clover for crazy pp
I didn't like this mod either
The last entry on the list is "Traceable"
an alternative to hidden
You can't see the note at any point
only the approach
which will tell you when to press and where to move your cursor
a pretty cool mod!
In addition to that we also have couple of customized existing mods
Half time now has "Day core" version
This is like a Nightcore to DT
and new fail mod - builds
The map starts behind the doors
when you miss, it opens a bit
A mod to have fun for 1 time
There is also a possibility to create new game modes
in addition to std, taiko, mania and ctb
There are some custom modes already, here is one:
Since there is a base for new opportunities
The community now is up to plant the seed and give birth to something amazing
which is just a matter of time
due to all those genial and talented community members
In terms of gameplay it's the same game but with a different UI
Actually the new scoring system has been finally applied
Something like ScoreV2 with a punishment
for inaccurate press on the slider
It used to be unimportant at which point you press the slider: just click and drag
and you got perfect hit
Now you will get 100s for losing the rhythm
Finally it's ranked
This should have been long ago
In order to understand the impact
I am showing you a comparison of the same replay
in the old scoring system and the new one.
The different is enormous
due to a lower accuracy
the pp would be decreased as a result
The UI design was changed a bit
and its elements positioning
HP bar, unstable rate
Top, key pressed, mixer
etc. Let's see what's new
This is a density graph which shows the number of object per time period
This is very handy for scrolling replays
the whole scrolling is a new addition!
You can check the replay at any time point
Rewinding backwards and forward
There is a new panel
with map info before the map loads
During the breaks you will see your intermediate result
At the end you will see the score screen as always
It looks different too
I would make the BG more visible though
since BG is my primary source for recognizing the map being played
By the way, what do you refer to when you see a score screen?
The song name or the BG?
Let me know in the comments!
There is also a button for downloading the replay
Very convenient
It will be possible to manually adjust the playfield
or the whole game in general
This is an amazing solution
since there are people who do not like to play on full screen
This function lets you adjust your experience to your individual preference
Now let me go over the rest of the changes
One core change is that the new client is a lot faster than the current one.
I mean it
The song selection tree was slightly changed
The beatmap set is now a section which has difficulties
There is an options button now
Where you can clear local scores
delete or modify the selected map
The top bar is also very useful
which has Options and title screen buttons
Familiar game modes
osu!direct web components
Messages, friends
Media player
Pretty small
Login screen and your profile
Offline players get ready to be amazed
Osu! now has online statuses just like discord and Steam
"Do not disturb"
and "Offline"
And notifications panel
with downloaded maps, skins and updates
In conclusion, I can say that the developers have tried to make the client
as comfortable for the end-user as possible
and give the client a new base for development thanks to open source

I will cover that in the future videos
I tried to demonstrate interesting and important updates for you
