Chapter 3
The gray cat ran to the river where he discovered a strange creature a couple of hours ago. This time nobody and nothing will stop him. The warrior stopped, taking his breath away and looked at the river.
Luckily, it quickly smelled like a vole and the cat licked its lip, but he had no right to eat until he took the whole tribe's prey. He was faithful to the Warrior's Law and was not going to break it.
The cat bent over the grass and saw a lean body of a mouse running out of its inconspicuous under the leaves of the mink. Grey and skinny, she pulled her face up and smelled it. The wind blew in the opposite direction, so the victim relaxed and started to run on rotten grass in search of grains or acorns.
"Now, a little... Another step..."
The warrior was trembling with impatience.
His sacrifice was getting closer and closer until it finally stopped at the old rotten stump and started digging underground. The mouse was fond of searching for worms at least, so it did not notice the danger hanging over it.
The cat took another step and jumped.
The mouse, hearing the rustle, turned around, but it was too late; it only had time to publish a squeak for the last time, and then quieted, hanging in the mouth of the hunter. The laughter of the Abyss smirked and put another warm carcass of the victim under the leaves. This was not enough for the whole tribe of starving people, so he decided to catch someone else.
The main thing was luck. Luckily, he had a thrush on the branch of the tree underneath him to clean his feathers.
The cat looked back at the distance to the victim and jumped on the nearest branch, almost falling, but stood still. The thrush was two steps away from him, and he crawled carefully, pinning his stomach to the rough bark. The bird was so passionate about its work that it paid no attention to anything.
"That's great, you won't leave.
He waited for a while and jumped decisively, setting his paws apart and releasing his claws. The bird came to her senses too late, screaming desperately and waving its wings in an attempt to take off, but it wasn't there - the warrior was faster.
Mig - and the bird joined the dead vole. Then the cat managed to catch the rabbit and, proud of himself, hurried back to the camp, dragging the court game.
The extinction of the stars lay on the sun-kissed ledge of rock. She saw a cat and got up. The warrior hastily threw the game into the general pile, where some skinny bird with a less fatty and less seldom-fatted squirrel was lying in an orphan's pile and came up to the leader.
The cat looked skinny and exhausted, but her amber eyes were still shiny.
- Well done, - she wheezed, rubbing her cat's tail on her shoulder, - you did a good job.
- That's not enough, - said Hohhot the Abyss, a frown on her praise, looking at her skinny relatives, who had started to approach the pile little by little.
- I'll catch them later.
And I longed to see if the tribe would survive such a hungry test.
It was as if the cat had guessed his sorrowful thoughts, as she had said:
- Don't worry. I had already sent soldiers to hunt.
- And patrolling? - The herald has already chosen cats.
"I'm afraid that no matter how much the neighboring tribes look at our trouble. Otherwise, we'll all feel bad," but he didn't say a word out loud.
Instead, he raised his head to heaven, where the first stars had already begun to appear.
- Didn't the Star Tribe send us a sign?
- Our ancestors do not leave us in trouble.
- I know that myself, it's just... It's scary if half the tribe doesn't live to see the Young Leaf season, - he just sighed.
The extinction of the stars looked with sympathy at the cat, whose ribs had already begun to appear through its thinner wool, but remained silent. She felt he was right, but she didn't want to show that she shared his opinion.
The tribe needed a strong leader, but not a weak-liked cat that was gradually losing faith.
- Go and get some sleep before the next day. He'll be heavier, - she said gently, pressing her cheek against him.
The cat looked at the cat with despair, seeing her eyes shining with the reflections of the stars, but they caught a shadow of doubt and fear.
She wasn't a Star Warrior, she was just an ordinary cat. She couldn't predict the future and what it would be like.
Although the leaders were closer to the Star Tribe, only the healer could predict the future.
The cat felt deadly tired but understood that he would hardly be able to close his eyes. But he decided not to argue, and humbly nodded and headed for the cave of soldiers, dragging his tail on the ground.
The cave was warm and dry, and the steam was rising from the sleeping cats pressing against each other. He put his head on his feet, praying to his ancestors to survive the harsh year of winter, and gradually he began to overcome the dream.
He could no longer resist, the cat closed his eyes.
A shadow flashed in front of him in the clearing but quickly hiding until the camp finally drowned in darkness.
Meanwhile, the cruiser was already landing in the woods, just outside their camp.
