Наткнулся тут на любопытную статью, понял что не могу сходу объяснить разницу между accuracy и precision. По-русски и то, и то в первом приближении "точность", а остальное извлекается из контекста.
Оказалось, вопрос актуальный, вот, что нам говорит Merriam Webster Dictionary:
Many of us often use precision and accuracy as synonyms, but not scientists and engineers (а это как раз мы с вами!). For them, accuracy describes a particular measurement—that is, how close it is to the truth. But precision describes a measurement system—that is, how good it is at giving the same result every time it measures the same thing.
This may be why even non-scientists now often speak of "precision instruments" for measuring, "precision landings" made by airplanes, "precision drilling" for natural gas, and so on.
Definition of accuracy
1 : freedom from mistake or error : correctness checked the novel for historical accuracy
2 : conformity to truth or to a standard or model : exactness impossible to determine with accuracy the number of casualties
Definition of precision
1 : the quality or state of being precise : exactness
2 : the degree of refinement with which an operation is performed or a measurement stated
Получается, что в общем случае accuracy ближе по смыслу к "достоверности" — в значении "степень соответствия некоторой модели", а precision — к "тиражируемости", способности повторить результат.
Если мы берём пример из науки, то accurate это насколько измерения, полученные в эксперименте, соответствуют предсказаному теорией значению, а precise — как хорошо наш эксперимент удается повторить с тем же результатом, или насколько велик разброс получаемых значений.
В переводе обратно на инженерный:
Precision = Reliability in statistics and psychometrics is the overall consistency of a measure. По-русски говоря, "кучность" стрельбы.
Accuracy = Validity is the extent to which a concept, conclusion or measurement is well-founded and corresponds accurately to the real world. А это как раз уже "меткость".
