Norway's major cities give you the best of both worlds - urban life and untouched nature. Add something to your holiday with these scenic excursions.

Norway's major cities are vibrant with energy, from new neighborhoods and innovative cuisine to the world of fashion and art. But you don't have to go far to discover the surprising contrasts of this country.

Cities also offer a large number of steep hills and vantage points, with popular hiking trails suitable for all levels. Norwegians of all ages alternate daily urban activities with adventures in nature. For many inhabitants it is simply a way of life.

This summer follow us on the asphalt and on the paths to discover our major cities both from low and high altitude. Here are five easy mountain hikes from the most popular cities.

Oslo: Excursion to Vettakollen

Route: about 1.2 km one way
Level of difficulty: easy
Altitude above sea level: 419 meters

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city within minutes, this route is for you. Just 1.2 kilometers from the metro station, the top of the Vettakollen hill is one of the most easily accessible walking tours from the city centre.

Follow the trail through Nordmarka Forest, Oslo's “garden”, and you'll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the city.

Bergen: hike to Fløyen Mountain

Route: about 5 km
Level of difficulty: medium
Altitude above sea level: 400 meters

When it comes to exceptional views and accessible paths it is difficult to beat Bergen. Surrounded by steep mountains, the city is idyllically situated on the fjord. Start your day with a hike in the mountains, then return down to enjoy the lively life of the city centre.

Visit Bergen, the local tourist office, for a guided tour of Mount Fløyen, a peak 400 meters above sea level. Climb the Fløibanen funicular and join one of the day trips on the mountain. During the tour you'll walk along signposted trails through unspoiled nature, while admiring the city from different angles.

Tromsø: hike to Mount Fløya

Route: depends on which route you choose
Level of difficulty: easy
Altitude above sea level: 671 meters

Every year in summer this mountain attracts many visitors who want to see the midnight sun.

The view from Fløya is formidable. You can see all of Tromsø and the surrounding islands. It's also the best place in town to see the midnight sun.

There are many ways to get to the top. Some choose to take the cable car up to Storsteinen and then walk up the hill. Others climb the 324 steps of the “Sherpatrappa ladder”, which starts near the valley station on the mainland of Tromsø.

Stavanger region: excursion to Dalsnuten

Route: two-hour hike
Level of difficulty: easy
Altitude above sea level: 324 meters

Discover some of the slightly underrated vantage points in the Stavanger region. This part of Norway is known for its famous Preikestolen (“the Pulpit”) and Kjeragbolten attractions, but the area's many varied landscapes offer many other impressive alternatives.

The Dalsnuten lookout point, located in Sandnes, is the right choice if you're looking for an easy hike around Stavanger.

The route includes everything from signposted trails and steep hills to small lakes ideal for swimming. Don't forget to bring a “matpakke” (packed lunch). There's nothing like a snack after a nice walk.

Trondheim: hike to Storheia

Route: about 5 km one way
