The fact is that American manufacturers are notable for their considerable conservatism. While motorcycle manufacturers all over the world switched to foot shift and manual clutch, Harley Davidson and Indian, faithful to tradition, continued to produce bikes with foot pedal and manual gearshift, the handle of which was at Harley Davidson on the left side of the tank, and at Indian on the right side. The shift handle was connected to the gearbox with a special connecting device. Of course, in order to simplify the design and increase the reliability of the beavers, the handle was mounted directly on the transmission under the seat - this is the jockey shift 🙂 As for the foot clutch, it is important to note that the original pedal was made according to the scheme of a lever (heel-foot) and had no return spring. The pedal was locked in place when the toe was pulled out so
