Classical and Popular Italian Fairy Tales - Straparola: L'Augel Belverde (Night IV, Fairytale III) Part 4

When the brothers returned, Serena went to meet them and begged them with all her heart to satisfy his desire to take possession of the magical bird, because Fluvio, just thinking of the dangerous beast he had to face, said that he did not feel like risking his life for the third time; but Acquirino, although he too had repeatedly refused to leave, in the end let himself be softened by his beloved sister's heartrending tears, convinced Fluvius to please her this time, and left together in search of Augel Belverde.

After several days of walking, they reached a beautiful meadow, in the center of which stood a tall and majestic tree, surrounded by many strange and unique marble figures that seemed to live, and there was a stream nearby. And right on the branches of that lush tree, fluttered happily fluttering the Augel Belverde, uttering words and speeches divinely delicious. The brothers came down from the horses, which they left on the meadow to graze, and approached the marble statues. A shy touch with the fingers was enough, which were also transformed into statues instantly. After several months had passed, Serena, seeing that the brothers were not coming back, anguished, began to mourn their loss, until among the tears an impulse drove her to try the feat and wanted to go herself to look for them. She rode a lot, but good luck led her to the same garden where Augel Belverde lived, which delighted just by hearing him speak. When she entered the garden, she immediately recognized the horses of the brothers who were still grazing blissfully, and approaching two statues with a familiar appearance, she recognized the brothers in them, and she was shocked.

Then she dismounted from her horse and approached the tree, where she stretched out her arm, and Augel Belverde placed herself on her hand. Seeing himself so captured, he begged the girl to let him free, which at the time of need would show her his gratitude. But Serena replied that she could not release him at all if she had not previously saved her brothers. Then Augel Belverde said, "Look at me under the left wing, there you will find a greener pen than the others, with yellow marks. Take it, and rub the eyes of the statues with it, and as you have touched them your brothers will return in human form. Serena did as Augel Belverde told her, and immediately the brothers came back to life. Happy, the three kissed and embraced. Having satisfied the girl's wish, Augel begged Serena to give him his freedom, promising that if one day they met again and if they needed help, he would come to their aid. But Serena, not yet happy, said that she would not release him until they found out who their real parents were and where they lived, and begged him to be patient again. Then they discussed at length who was to keep the bird, and finally came to an agreement that Serena would keep it, which would keep it with love and care; they climbed on their horses and happily returned all three with Augel Belverde at home.

The king, who had not seen them for a long time, was very worried and asked the neighbors if they had any news of them, but in vain. When they were back, it was not two days before the king showed up again, and he wanted to know why they had disappeared for so long. Acquirino replied that they had all three of the serious misfortunes, and only for this reason they had not yet been able to go to the palace, but that they would be happy to do whatever they could to pay homage to the sovereign. The king, all content and moved by the dangers escaped from those three young men, this time did not want to return to the palace without them, and so, without being seen, Aquirin took with him the dancing water, Fluvius the singing apple, and Serena the Augel Belverde, and all three happy followed the king to the royal palace. They all went in and sat down at the table. The evil mother of the king and the bad sisters of Queen Chiaretta, seeing those shining children so pretty and good manners, immediately suspected something and began to get very nervous. At the end of the meal, Acquirino said to the king: "Your Majesty, before leaving us, we would like to show you some wonderful things that you will surely like very much.»
