Classical and Popular Italian Fairy Tales - Straparola: L'Augel Belverde (Night IV, Fairytale III) Part 3

One day it happened that King Ancillot was walking with his courtiers, and he passed by chance in front of their house, and since the three brothers had not yet seen the king, they went down the stairs and met him, welcoming him with great reverence; and the king, who was a good observer, noticed the star on their foreheads, and immediately had a plunge into his heart, thinking that those three young men could be his three real children. So he stopped and asked them, "Who are you? Where are you from?" And they humbly replied, "We are poor strangers who have come to live in your city. And the king said, "Well, I am very pleased, but tell me, what do you call yourselves?" The major replied, "My name is Aquitaine," the second said, "My name is Fluvius," and the girl finally said, "And I am Serene. Then the king said to them, "I would like to invite all three of you to my palace for lunch tomorrow. Please come."

The three twins, blushed with shyness and unable to say no to the king, accepted the invitation. Returning to the palace, Ancillotto said to his mother: "You know, going for a walk today I came across three pretty twins, two beautiful young men and a beautiful girl, all three of them with a golden star on their foreheads, which reminded me so much how my poor children that Chiaretta had promised me should be. Not to be seen, the wicked mother smiled at her son's speech, but inside she felt a thick heart for fear, so she immediately sent to call the comar accomplice, and said: "We're in trouble, my comar! The king's children are alive, and they are more beautiful than ever! And she said, "How is it possible, Your Majesty? We entrusted them to the river so that they would drown in the box, and since then we have known nothing more. How do you now know, you, that they live?" And the Queen Mother answered: "I have understood it from the words of the king, and from a story that I just made. You have to do something to make them disappear, or we all risk our skins. And he reassured her, "Rest assured, my lady, that I already have a plan in mind to get rid of them. Having said that, the comar went to the children's house; she found Serena alone, and attached a button.

After a long conversation, she said to her, "Have you ever had, my daughter, the wonderful dancing water?" Serena said no, and she said, "Oh, you have to have it, my girl! I knew how lucky it would be for you, if you could have it... know that if you washed your face with that water, you would become even more beautiful. Then the girl asked how she could have it, and the comare replied: "Send your brothers and sisters to look for it, that there is a lot of it around here. Having said that, he returned to the palace. When the brothers returned, Serena begged them to go and look for the water that was dancing. They didn't want to, and didn't even know which way to go, but Serena was very sorry for their hesitancy, and eventually they gave in for the love of their dear sister; they took a cruet and left. After a long ride, they arrived at a clear and clear water spring, where they saw a dove cooling down. The dove was not afraid of them and asked, "Where are you going, children?" And Fluvius replied, "Let's look for the famous dancing water." "Oh, poor you," replied the dove, "Who has sent you but into such a dangerous mission?" "It's our sister who desires her so much." "Poor children... this mission will be fatal to you. You must know that the place where the dancing water gushes forth is teeming with ferocious beasts, and seeing you, they will surely devour you. But leave this task to me, you stay here safe, I will bring it to you.

And so said, he took the ampulla under his wing and flew away; after reaching the spring and filling the ampulla with dancing water, he brought it back to the two young men who were waiting for him with great anxiety. They thanked the good dove warmly, and took custody of the precious ampulla, they soon returned home. They handed it over to Serena, but asked her not to entrust them with other tasks of this kind, because they could risk their lives. But a few days later, the king came back to see them, and asked, "Why didn't you come to lunch the other day?" And they replied, "We are sorry, Your Majesty, but we have been held back by heavy commitments. Then the king said, "I look forward to seeing you in every way for lunch tomorrow, do not miss it." The twins apologized, and the king returned to the palace, where he told his mother that he had seen the three children again; the queen mother had another shake, for she understood that this time too the plan had failed, and they were still alive. She then sent for the comar to which she confided her concerns, and she was reassured that she would not fail this time. She left the palace and went to the children's house. Like the first time, she found Serena alone, and asked her how it had gone with the water dancing, and she replied that the brothers had found her, but that they had also risked their lives. And the comar said "Well, daughter, I would like to see you with the apple that sings, because I'm sure that in all your life you have never seen and heard anything more melodious. And Serena replied, "Fine, but I wouldn't know where to find him, and I doubt very much that my brothers would risk their lives a second time. "Okay, but if they were able to bring you the water that dances without losing your life, it means that they are smart, and certainly will succeed in this second undertaking. Having said that, he went back to the palace.
