Ferrari SF90 Stradale, 1000 horsepower hybrid

The first PHEV of the Prancing Horse has some great numbers and it could only be like that. A sedan with a Formula 1 single-seater heart

It is the first plug-in hybrid Ferrari in the history of the Prancing Horse. It has a disproportionate power, a thousand round horses and is called like the F1 single-seater: SF90 Stradale. It can also travel up to 25 km in electric mode only, in absolute silence. These few key elements are enough to show what the new Ferrari supercar is made of, heir to all the most extreme hypersports of the Prancing Horse, from the F40 to the Enzo and the last LaFerrari.

It is no coincidence that the international launch of this extreme coupé took place right on the Ferrari test track. Because it wants to establish a symbolic link with the F1 single-seater born on this circuit, of which the SF90 Stradale takes its name and from which it derives part of the electric technology of the powerplant.

For his new Hypercar, the Prancing Horse coined an ambitious slogan that was brought back almost everywhere in Fiorano to motivate and remind the projects of the challenge that awaited them. "Giving to image", which could be translated as "daring beyond the imagination". And really in the design of the new SF90 Stradale Ferrari went beyond the imaginable. Just tell us about the truly exclusive specifications of this car. Apart from the novelty of the electric propulsion, there is a lot of new things to discover under the bonnet of this hypercar of the Prancing Horse: from the design, to the excellent compromise reached between power, weight and driveability, to the new cockpit that provides a revolutionary interface between the steering wheel and the dashboard that drastically changes the driving feeling of the driver on board.

There are three electric motors for a specific purpose. One, the largest, is mounted at the rear, attached to the engine and alone delivers 150 kW (204 hp). This engine always works, ensuring a boost of power to the SF90 Stradale that increases torque and acceleration performance. In addition, there are two other smaller electric motors (85 kW total power) on the front axle that have a double purpose: first of all they operate the front wheels, and therefore the SF90 Stradale in certain conditions becomes a four-wheel drive to all intents and purposes. They also help to generate a surplus of power during acceleration and optimize traction. But they also do a fundamental job to improve road-holding when cornering: being electric motors, they can be rotated at different speeds on each of the wheels. In this way, managed by the sophisticated on-board control unit, they are able to generate a torque vectoring effect at the front that helps to close the trajectory in curves by limiting any understeer.

The two front electric motors, however, are deactivated over 220 km/h, speed after which the SF90 Stradale returns to be a pure rear wheel drive driven by the 780 horsepower of the thermal V8 but also by the extra horsepower of the rear electric motor. The electric engines are powered by a 7.9 kWh battery located behind the seats. Which can be recharged through a normal home electrical outlet in just under 3 hours or at the city's charging stations in even shorter times. Obviously, being a hybrid, the SF90 Stradale recharges its batteries even while driving using deceleration and braking. On the contrary, in this case the derivation from the F1 technology is even more marked because this supercar adopts, like the SF90 F1, a system of brake by Wire, or braking operated by electrical control and not by mechanical means. The best way to regenerate energy from the violent deceleration of carbo-ceramic brakes.

A further masterpiece of design, however, is also inside the car. Where the SF90 Stradale has adopted a new man-machine interface, abolishing the classic controls scattered around the cockpit. The steering wheel has become a kind of three-dimensional display. The space occupied by the traditional spokes has become a real digital display where all the commands for mapping and normal use of the car are operated to the touch. With your finger. There's not a vibration that returns the tactile feeling when you touch the touch controls, as is the case on some smartphones, but there's a sound alert, a beep to prove the command inserted. If the driver wants to change driving mode, travel only in electric, operate the radio or air conditioning or even insert the function "qualifying" (maximum performance of the engine) can operate it to the touch on the spokes of the steering wheel by touching the appropriate control.
