The twilight was shimmering with glare on the ridges of the waves of the summer sea. Every now and then a light fin flashed among them, reflecting the bluish glow of the moon. Finally, the mermaid princess Maiden dug out and shaken her head, spraying drops from wet hair. The sea was noisy, echoing the splash of its tail. Over the course of several hundred years, this roll-call became commonplace: the sea loved the princess, greeted her with serenity - no storm, no ships - and she was responsible for reciprocity, although she loved to bathe not only in the sea but also in the moonlight and in the sunlight.

How beautiful the sky is! How fresh the air! Maiden wrote songs about distant countries, where on the edge of the sea, on the far-away land lies an unknown secret. And she dreamed that someday what she sang about would come true. The mermaid longed for a land she had never seen before, for a sky she would never get, and her crystal voice, as pure as the waters of the sea, reflected all her longing.

- Nice mermaid, but do you want to hear the stories of the clouds? - I heard a voice from above. A girl with snow-white wings approached the water surface.

She was so beautiful that Maiden didn't find a response right away. It was the first time she had seen such a graceful creature.

- Amazing things happen on land that you can't even imagine! - the bird girl continued. - There are earthly girls like me with legs, and girls like you without wings gather flowers in a green meadow. They weave wreaths out of them and create true beauty with their hands.

The bird girl's name was Gwaelan, and she became the first friend of a mermaid princess not from the sea kingdom. Ah, if Maiden had wings, she would have traveled the world! Ah, if Gweilan had a tail, she would have explored the depths of the sea, swimming with dolphins and dancing among the waves!

Every summer night, Maiden sailed to the surface to meet Gwaelan. They were located on a small rock protruding from the sea: a mermaid lay her head on the knees of a bird girl, and she weaved flowers into her wet hair, which she brought from the land. She talked about what she saw flying over the ground, and it became a story for beautiful mermaid songs, which she sang in a beautiful voice that Gwaelan liked so much. The salty splashes touched their delicate skin, a nice warm breeze played with their hair, and the flowers exuded amazing smells. There was nothing more beautiful than two girls from different worlds meeting in each other's arms under the silver moonlight.

When summer came to an end, Gwaelan said she had to fly far, far away, to warm countries. She will wait there for the cold season, but next summer she will definitely come back to tell Maiden new stories about what she sees.

- We will see each other for sure! - The bird girl promised fervently.
- I'll be waiting! - A mermaid wiped salt drops off her face.

No one was in the bravest pack of Gwailane. She was born on the island, and as a child, barely fledged, she explored it all the way up and down. Then the brave traveler flew around the neighboring islands, floating over the forests and mountains, more than anyone else, she knew about the life of earthly people, listened to animal tales and sighs of roses in flower beds. And when she said goodbye to the mermaid Maiden, making a farewell circle over the sea, and flew to the southern countries, she promised to return next summer to tell even more incredible stories.

The mermaid sang the saddest of her songs for a farewell: the pain and hope, the bitterness of parting and the unspeakable sadness. For the inhabitants of the sea kingdom, time passed quickly - Maiden was already several hundred years old, and she was still young. Therefore, the year of waiting passed quickly for her, although she dug up every night at the cliffs, admiring the stars and remembering the gentle touch of the hands of Gwaelan.

Finally, it was summertime again, and then it changed in the fall. Summer after summer the mermaid looked into the boundless sky every day, hoping to see the winged silhouette of her friend, to hear her cheerful voice.

Maiden sat down on the rock and her melodic song was spreading over the waves. She sang about love, waiting, and long-distance separation.

And then one day, when the mermaid finished singing, the sea near her foamy, and out of the waves came a strange dolphin. He gave Maiden a faded rose.

- It was a flower that should decorate the hair of a pretty mermaid princess. And the story that Gwaelan promised to bring from her travels.

From bitter tears, mermaid rose alive and sighed. This breath told much more than any fairy tale. Maiden realized that her friend would never be able to return to the sea. Still, despite everything, Gwaelan couldn't break her promise, and her last story got into the heart of the mermaid, making him shrink.

The endless sea stretched from horizon to horizon. Wherever you look, there are waves everywhere. Waves and serenity. And overall this a beautiful clear voice was spreading, singing about eternity, in which the sea and the sky loved each other.
