These mysterious dreams... (Part 9)

Custom-made dreams

Of course, not every unpleasant dream speaks of a disease. Very often the causes of serious diseases are such things as stuffiness in the room, overcrowded stomach, uncomfortable sleeping position in bed.

It is often said that in a dream a person sees himself flying into an abyss or falling into a pit, after which he wakes up immediately. Such a dream can come from the fact that the sleeping person lies on his left side and makes it difficult for the heart to work. The heart stops for a few seconds and may dream of falling into an abyss.

Well, since many external causes can affect the content of dreams, we can obviously cause dreams on demand. And this has been proved many times. At the end of the last century, the Norwegian scientist Wold conducted the following experiments: at night, he tied his employees joints lower than ankles with a cord. Stops were brought to such a position as if a person was standing on tiptoes. The sleeper dreamed that he was running, climbing stairs, getting on tiptoes, riding a bicycle.

When they put a hot water bottle at a man's feet while he was sleeping, he dreamt of a volcano erupting: he was running from the mountain on hot rocks, which burned his leg. As it turned out, shortly before the experience, this man read a book about volcanoes and volcanic eruptions.

During a quick sleep the brain works very actively. But if it is so, we can expect not only fantastic, chaotic dreams, but also thinking about what a person was thinking in the daytime. Especially it can be expected in cases when a person thinks about a problem, a difficult question not one or two days. Maybe in a dream we are able to continue our thinking and find a solution?

We can! And there is nothing mystical about it. In dreams, mathematicians solved problems, composers finished composing music, poets wrote poems. The famous French mathematician A. Poincare claimed that he had fruitful ideas in a semi-sleepy state. German chemist F.A. Kekule saw during his sleep the structural formula of benzene, which he thought about a lot during the day.

Some people think about complex problems before going to bed and often get their solution in the morning or at night. Muscovites were examined. Almost a quarter of them say that sometimes useful thoughts were born in their sleep.

All of these examples show that even in dreams, brain work can be quite meaningful.

If you read a very interesting book or work on something with passion, the dream goes away. The reason for this is that there is a persistent source of arousal in the cerebral cortex. It is not easy for others to fall asleep if they have a strong feeling - joy, anxiety, fear - and in this case, the cortex is a persistent source of arousal - there is no sleep. When a person does fall asleep, the hearth sometimes remains connected with the mental work begun in the day, he continues to function in his sleep, and since the brain at this time does not interfere with other people's irritations, this work can be more effective.

Here is one explanation for the possibility of mental work in sleep. And such work, by the way, can lead to the same erroneous conclusions: dreaming "predicted" the future discovery. In fact, we are facing the end of a thought not in the afternoon, but when a person sleeps, but his brain continues to work actively.
