Planting a lotus

Lotus loves the warmth that helps him grow. Put him in a bowl full of sunlight. The lotus is planted in spring when the water in the pond becomes warmer and the frost is far behind. Count from mid-May to ensure a good installation. If you are in a cold region, bet in June.

Steps to plant the lotus

  1. Fill a pot of water soil, where you can add some bone powder.
  2. Clean the 15 cm deep hole
  3. Set up the plant and tamper with the soil
  4. Place the plant in your pond or container
  5. Place it at a depth that allows the leaves to remain on the surface (lower the pot little by little)
  6. Maintain the lotus

Lotus is like a rich substrate. From March to July, add slow-release fertilizer once a month. Don't forget to spray the leaves in case of hot weather. They are used to wet heat, but cannot stand the drought. Cut off faded leaves regularly.

Wintering lotus

If your lotus has a depth of at least 50 cm, it will have to be removed from the pond for the winter! Store it in a water container in a frost-free place.

Multiply the lotus

There are two ways of breeding: division or sowing.

Separation: Just take a part of the rhizome with the young stem and put it in a new pot.

Sowing: We return the seeds to the heart of the inflorescence as soon as the flowering has passed. The inflorescence looks like a green capsule with small holes. When it dries out, it becomes brown and the holes become larger. You can cut it off when it is still green and collect the seeds before drying.

Step by step:

  1. Once the seeds are dry, sand them to make them permeable
  2. Let them soften up in the water for a few days
  3. Cut them short.
  4. Wait until the stems and roots appear
  5. As soon as the seedlings have 4-5 leaves, you can transplant them into a pond

  2. Fill it almost to the top of the potting soil for aquatic plants
  3. Add a fertilizer for aquatic plants that will dissipate over time
  4. Place the rhizome by spreading its roots well. Take care, they are very fragile.
  5. Cover the roots with potting soil, but not with an outlet that should not be covered
  6. Tampering with the substrate
  7. Fold the sack
  8. Add a few stones to keep it
  9. Soak the pot in the pelvis
  10. Then put it in the pool

How deep do you plant the water lily?

The depth depends on the size of its leaves, so they reach the water level. Then lower the pot gradually. In the long term, it should be more than 60 cm deep to avoid winter frost. 40 cm is quite enough for a dwarf variety.

Flowers of all colors

There are about 50 species and hundreds of varieties of water lilies in the world. Some are not adapted to our climate, but others support our harsh winters. Nymphaea's "The attraction" adorns the pools with its bright red flowers, but requires a pool depth of at least 40 cm. The Aurora Nymphaeus is characterized by softer tones of orange heart and soft pink petals. The 'Odorata Sulfurea Grandiflora' water lily has large yellow flowers scented to illuminate your pool. To enjoy the blue flowering, you should choose a tropical variety such as the blue water lily at Cape King of Blues. However, the water should be at 15°C all year round! Order for the interior.

Varieties of dwarf water lily

Do you have a small garden or a terrace? The table on dwarf varieties! White lovers love Nymphaea tetragona with a golden-yellow heart and white petals. Nymphaea pygmaea 'Rubra' has small carmine flowers 5 cm in diameter. Nymphaea 'Indiana' is very similar to Aurora, with shades of orange and rose.

Maintain a water lily

Once in place, you have to take care of the water lilies a little bit. Give them a fertilizer ball in spring so they can eat all year round. Every three years it is advisable to separate the water lily so that your pond is not completely covered. At this time, cut off the yellowish leaves and cut the rhizome into two parts. Place the first half of the rhizome back in place and transplant the second half if you have the space you need.
