A fire that changes the history of London. Part 2.

50 years to rebuild London City

London after the fire is in desperate need of rebirth in the ruins. People want to build a quiet and beautiful London, London with open streets and more fire-resistant properties. This gives architects and city planners a new opportunity to build London. Scientists and architects, including Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke, have been involved in the bidding and have come up with many options.

The king has newly enlisted a coal tax for the reconstruction of public facilities and churches. However, these plans for public solicitation were ultimately not adopted. The reconstruction and restoration project in London has been extensively improved on the basis of the original old streets. Sir Rennes hosted the restoration of the City of London, including St. Paul's Cathedral. Hook served as a surveyor and a London City Examiner. New houses, new sewers, and sidewalks also appeared on the widened road for the first time. It is worth mentioning that the new house is no longer a wooden house but has bricks. According to the records, a London citizen said at the time: "This is not only the best but also the healthiest city in the world!"

The reconstruction of the City of London took about 50 years. The restoration of St. Paul's Cathedral was completed in 1711. That is to say, many people who have experienced the fire have died before the city has completely changed. But the economy of London began to recover during this period. First of all, urban reconstruction has created a lot of employment opportunities for the UK and even caused a labor shortage. A chain effect, a large number of European immigrants crossed the strait to participate in the reconstruction of the City of London. During the same period, the population of European cities declined, while London did not fall back and became the largest city in Northern Europe.

This reconstruction of London can also be said to be the prototype of the modern financial capital we have seen today. For example, the West End of London is mainly a commercial and wealthy area, while the eastern part is dominated by the poor and the working people at the bottom. This urban division was gradually formed after the reconstruction project.

The British made a profound reflection after the disaster. Perhaps it was the fire that drove the dramatic changes in urban construction in London, and this change also affected other areas of society. In the 14th year after the fire, London began to have a fire insurance company. In the 18th century, these insurance companies funded the establishment of the fire brigade. Until the public fire station was established 200 years after the fire, the city of London has been "protected" by these private fire brigades.

The London Fire Memorial, built-in 1830, designed by Christoph Rein to commemorate the 1666 London fire.

Today, in addition to the information about the fires in the museum, in the vicinity of the Bank of England, near the fire point of Putin Lane, people can see a monument of 61.5 meters high (above). Designed by Sir Rehn, this tall building has 311 steps and the top is a ball surrounded by flames. For more than 300 years, it has stood on the streets of bustling London, watching the traffic, silently reminding the people of the past: the fire of 1666!

As for the careless baker, according to the London Museum, the baker, Thomas Farriner, had investigated the cause of the fire, but at the time there was another person named Robert Hurbert who claimed to be an arsonist. People no longer blame the baker. Farina returned to the bakery and continued to bake his bread. But I believe that he will repeatedly check the fire and the oven before going to sleep for the rest of his life.
