The house with all its inhabitants was managed by penitent spirits, who favored people. Their name comes from the Latin word penus, which means provisions or foodstuffs. Therefore, it is believed that originally the pencils represented a household barn or pantry.
As the patrons of the storerooms, the penises were in charge of the supplies at home and used them along with other inhabitants, participating in home meals. During the meal at the common table, the pencils were thrown into the hearth pieces of food or put on the table figurines of pencils, and in front of them salt and clay bowls with food.
The connection between the penguins and the home, which is typical for many deities of the home, can be clearly seen. The hearth was a place of cooking, the whole family gathered at the hearth - such a connection between penises and fire is not surprising. Close to the family hearth, where fire was constantly maintained, the images of penguins were placed in the heart of the house. They were made of clay, stone or wood and stored in a special locker.
Thanks to the connection of the penguins with the hearth, their cult was close to the cult of Vesta and its sacred fire. In some ways, Vesta was responsible for the spiritual well-being of the family, and the penises were responsible for the material well-being of the family. They took care of the daily bread of the family and guarded each of its members.
Penats were given thank-you gifts when joyful events, such as weddings or births, took place in the family. If the family moved to another house, the penguins were taken with them and brought into the room first.
With the development of the Roman state there was a cult and public penises. One of the main sanctuaries of Rome were considered penises of the Roman people. They believed that they were transported by Aeneas from Troy to the city of Lavinius founded by him. Therefore Roman consuls brought them sacrifices, naming penises Lavinia. These penises were placed in the interior of the temple of the goddess Vesta and were considered as a guarantee of the inviolability of Rome. In solemn oaths, the penises were called out to the penises along with the address to Jupiter.
And of course, the famous saying "to return to their native penises" sounded initially as "to return to their native penises," that is, to the keepers of the house, his soul.

The care of the penata family was shared with the chests. However, unlike the penises, the chests were also revered outside the house. It was believed that the chests were guarded by their owners during travel, war and field work. They also believed that the Lars punished those who did not respect family relations, in particular those who were too cruel to slaves. Interestingly, Roman slaves, along with their masters, honored the lars, but not the penguins.
The cult of lars was focused on the crossroads. Every year after the end of the field work, in December, the Romans celebrated the Laralie or Kompitalie holiday dedicated to the Lars. It united all whose possessions converged on one crossroads, and the neighbors' laram made a joint sacrifice. At the crossroads during the Commissaries, heads of families hung woolen dolls and balls of wool, depicting, respectively, free members of the family and slaves. It is believed that these were symbols replacing human sacrifices.
The feast at the Compitale was a joint feast for free men and slaves. On this folk harvest festival it was customary to do something funny and obscene, and for this purpose the participants of the Commitaly wore masks of bark to remain unrecognized, doing all sorts of inappropriate things.
In the city the streets also had their own patrons-lars, whose altars were placed at the crossroads and decorated during the Commodities.
Laram was sacrificed for all family celebrations. Thus, the Roman bride took with her from her parents' house three copper coins, one left at the crossroads, the second brought as a gift to the Laram family, the third gave to her husband.
When the family left the house, the penises followed her, but the chests stayed in the house and protected it during the absence of the owners. Images of lars were stored in a special locker-lararium near the hearth, next to the images of penises, and were also made of stone or metal. Later, they began to be placed at the entrance to the house or next to the bedroom.
As well as penises, there were also public lars, keepers of the city and the state. As such, the twins Romulus and Remus, their breadwinner Akku Larenttius and other legendary characters, who were honored at the Communist Party, were honored.
The cult of lars and penises was extremely popular in Rome and survivor: one of the last imperial decrees against paganism in Rome - the decree of Theodosius from 392 yes - prohibited family ceremonies dedicated to penates and penises.
