Today we will face the transport of animals by train
National trains
You can transport small dogs, cats and other small pets at no cost under the following conditions:
Transportation is permitted in the first and second class of all train categories and in the Executive, Business, Premium and Standard service levels. The animals must be kept in a special container with dimensions not exceeding 70×30×50 and such as to exclude injury or damage to both travelers and cars.
In the case of trains made with ETR 450 material, the container must be kept on the knees. Only one container is allowed for each traveler.
On board the carriages with bunks, sleeping cars and Excelsior cars, you must purchase the entire compartment (excluding the guide dog for blind travelers).
Access to animals is not allowed in restaurant / bar carriages (except for the guide dog for the blind)
You can transport a dog of any size under the following conditions:
You can bring a dog of any size on all categories of national trains, in first and second class and in Business and Standard service levels. The Executive, Premium service level, the Silent Area, the sitting rooms and the restaurant / bar carriages are excluded. For the transport of the dog you must buy at the station ticket offices, the authorized travel agencies or by calling the Call Center, together with your ticket (of any type), a second class ticket or standard level at the basic price provided for the train used reduced by 50%, even for first class travel and Business service level.
The guide dog for blind travelers is admitted free of charge on all categories of trains, classes or service levels and in restaurant / bar carriages. Furthermore, for these dogs there is no obligation to purchase the entire sleeping compartment, VL or Excelsior.
In all cases, for the transport of the dog of any size you must always have the canine registration certificate and the health card (or, for foreign citizens, the passport to replace both documents). This obligation is not provided for guide dogs for blind travelers.
The guide dog for the blind can travel on all trains for free without any obligation.
Change of booking and ticket
You can change the booking and change the ticket for dog transport only if:
provided for your ticket and within its time limits;
request them along with your ticket and for trains that allow the transport of the dog.
Refund
You can get your dog's ticket refunded only if:
provided for your ticket and within its time limits;
request it along with your ticket.
The minimum non-refundable amount (10 euros) is calculated on the total amount.
Regional Trains
You can transport small dogs, cats and other small pet pets free of charge, in the first and second class of all categories of Regional trains, except for special exceptions, kept in a special container of no more than 70×30×50 cm and such to exclude injuries or damages to both passengers and cars.
You can also carry a dog of any size, provided with a muzzle and leash, on the platform or vestibule of the last carriage, except the time from 7 to 9 am weekdays from Monday to Friday, by purchasing a second class ticket at the rate set for the journey made reduced by 50%.
The guide dog of blind people is admitted free of charge, even if accompanied, on all train categories, without any restrictions. To transport the dogs, except the guide dog for the blind, it is necessary the certificate of registration to the canine registry and the health book, (or, for the dogs of the foreign citizens, the “passport of the dog” in substitution of both the documents), to be shown at the time of purchase of the animal's ticket, where applicable, and during the journey at each request of the staff.
Irregularities
You can log in with your dog to a different train than the one booked, if allowed by your ticket and within the time limits of the same, alerting the crew and, in the case of a dog of any size, paying any difference in price and the surcharge of 8 euros.
If you do not have a ticket for the animal on board the train (if requested) you will be regularized with the payment of the full base price provided plus a penalty (in the case of traveling in a sleeping car, the compartment must be purchased in full). The same regularization is provided if the animal is not admitted to transport and, in this case, you must also get off with the dog at first station where the train stops, without reimbursement of the amount paid.
