Style Story
The USA is considered to be the homeland of the direction, but there are different opinions about the time of its emergence. Some believe that industrial production was formed in the 90s of the last century, when America intensified industrial production. Everywhere new enterprises, the whole factory areas opened. And against this background, the aesthetics of urbanism was formed and stood out in a separate style of literature, music, fashion, interior design.
Others associate the birth of the direction with the Great Depression of the 30s. When factories and factories were forced to close or moved to the outskirts, the owners began to rent unused buildings for housing. And if at first the industrial theme as a living space was associated with the economic crisis, then closer to the 70's the originality of design of such buildings began to be appreciated incredibly.
Factory premises fermented by designers were transformed into offices, bars, art galleries, hotels, and shops. From there, industrial stylistics moved to residential interiors: both in the former industrial premises and in typical apartments with industrial attributes.
If is there a difference between "Loft" and "industrial style"?
Small, but there is. Loft can be called a local case of industrial style. After all, apart from the industrial aesthetics of textures and shapes, the living "attic" (loft in translation from English.) is characterized by a huge space, almost no interior partitions, and high ceilings. A classic loft is a former factory or warehouse space. And the industrial interior can make in a standard apartment.
The loft is more in line with the idea of bohemianism, exclusivity and high price. And the industrial style embodies a more brutal atmosphere which can be created by simple and practical materials. And if the loft is self-sufficient as an interior style and requires domination, the industrial often acts as a perfect background for more decorative design trends.
Features of industrial style in the interior.
Apartments and country houses of 100 sq.m. and more are suitable for industrial design. On objects of smaller size, it is appropriate to apply only some elements.
Key features:
- High ceilings
- Сommon premises
- Large windows
- Concrete and metal as leading finishing materials
- Uncloaked communications
- Minimalistic decor
Materials and finishes
The basis of room decoration in industrial style - materials with a pronounced texture: concrete, rough plaster, untreated and aged wood, wild stone, brickwork, metal.
Metal should be matte, with traces of rust, oxidation or abrasion. Iron, steel, aluminum are perfect. Shiny brass and gold are not suitable, their gloss will disrupt the production style. Iron and aluminum parts can simulate fittings.
Stylized or real pipes, beams, air ducts make the space relief. And to avoid the feeling of life in the factory, the metal should be combined with other wooden, stone textures.
Industrial style in design prefers simple finishing solutions:
- The walls can be covered with plaster, brick (or create an imitation of masonry). Effectively look bare concrete walls, which are visible cracks and irregularities.
- The ceiling can be simply whitewashed, matt stretch fabrics or single-level gypsum plasterboard construction are also suitable. The combination with beams of steel or neutral light shade is appropriate.
- Suitable type of floor: pouring concrete, wooden (floorboard or laminate), tile (matte large-format tiles gray, dark brown, gray), durable linoleum in gray tones.
Colors
The idea of styling under the factory premises dictates the choice of palette. The main color is grey and its shades. Complementary: white, beige, black, blue, dark green, brown. Matte metal textures with rust effect also support the atmosphere of urbanism.
If the industrial style is combined in the interior with minimalism, the leading color is white. Bright colors can be used occasionally in the form of accessories, posters, small decor. A popular method is monochrome decoration, when the walls are highlighted with a lighter shade, and the floor is darker. The combination of tones will make the situation less flat and monotonous.
Furniture
Industrial style furniture is laconic and simple. The shapes are clear, with metal frames and wooden parts, and the finish is unassuming. Sofas and armchairs with fabric monochrome upholstery in neutral shades will fit. What is not suitable: Walter's chair with "ears", a banquet with ruches, too bright and colorful colors. If the interior is eclectic, then objects of both modern and classic design will fit well into the environment of rough textures.
Often furniture basis part of some industrial equipment plays the role of. And it is possible to think of to the usual things the new setting: to convert wooden boxes into stools or dinner-wagon, to do an old metallic closet with sections shelving, to begin to use a step-ladder as shelves. A dinner-table in style of индастриал can be a former workbench.
Furniture in an industrial interior aspires to the largenesses (enormous sofa, long dresser, imposing kind столешница), because large objects counterbalance open-space. And the main principle of location is island: sofas opposite each other, in a center is a magazine dinner-wagon. Such composition assists a comfort.
Illumination
Typical chandeliers from industrial style are models from a metal (патинированного, lacquered), ordinary or thick pressed glass. Plafonds look quite differently: the minimal design(as a ball, cone) or intricately enough (as a grate, net). As roofing timbers, any details are used from factory mechanisms: standard stands, suspended chains. Cutely the naked lamps of Edison look with the open wiring.
Floor and настольные lamps in industrial style are associated with technical lamps from the sewing or milling workshops of the last century. Due to the application of sectional stands, a light stream is directed in a necessary place.
Decoration
The basic idea is minimalism. Single eye-catching details set the accents:
- Huge abstract paintings
- Old road signs
- Black and white photos in a wide Passepartout
- Art objects
- Street culture elements: graffiti, signs, billboards, lanterns
- Large mirrors
The accessories are everything that resembles the factory theme: a collection of water taps on the shelves, a group of gears on the wall, iron pipes as the basis for the racking. To make the apartment inhabited, use textiles - fluffy carpet, worn mats, decorative pillows of different colors. Living plants in floor troughs are the easiest way to soften the ascetic environment.
