Become a hairdresser
There are different ways to become a hairdresser. You can hire yourself as an inexperienced hairdresser and start learning on the field from scratch, starting with years of apprenticeship and then a year of the employment contract. Alternatively, you can also acquire the title of the hairdresser with three years of continuous employment contract in conjunction with attending a course in theoretical training. After three years of employment contract, you are awarded the title of hairdresser or hairdresser. Another possible way is to attend hairdressing schools, which provide a two-year training course and then a final practical year of internship at a company or salon. Also in this way, after a theoretical-practical examination, you get the title of a hairdresser.
It is essential that the school attended is accredited by the Region to which it belongs so that the title obtained can be considered valid. In order to enroll in the hairdressing school, it is necessary to have completed compulsory schooling.
Personal profile
A hairdresser must have the following characteristics:
- Nice, polite and helpful
- Talk to customers in fluency
- Always be updated on new fashions, products, techniques, methods
- Showing tidiness and cleanliness
- Enjoy good health and be able to stand up all day long
To set up one's own business
Nowadays, many young people decide to set up their own business and open their own salon.
Go to the tax office in your area and get the VAT number associated with your business issued. In addition, you must register with the Chamber of Commerce and present your regular license, as well as pay an annual membership fee. Finally, you will have to open a corporate business account in a credit institution that offers good incentives.
Draw up a business plan. It is a plan that defines every aspect of your business management, the expenses you will have to face and the challenges you may face in relation to your competitors. You may need to produce a business plan to obtain a loan or a license.
Business Plan
We will then provide you with a guide indicating the steps to open your salon.
Legal form
The different legal forms you can choose from are:
- Sole proprietorship
- Partnerships
- Capital companies
- Cooperative
For more detailed information about the individual legal forms, please follow the link.
There are a few factors to take into account when choosing the legal form of the company.
Capital: The costs of incorporation, capital requirements and minimum capital vary according to the legal form. In particular, capital requirements for the current year and for the next three to five years should be taken into account.
- Risk/liability: in general, the higher the risk of the company or its financial commitment, the more it is advisable to choose a limited liability company/
- Autonomy: depending on the legal form, the scope of action is more or less limited. It is, therefore, necessary to determine whether the entrepreneur wants to work alone or with partners and whether he prefers to integrate investors or partners into his business.
- Taxes: Depending on the legal form, the income and commercial substance of the company and the owner are subject to taxes separately or jointly. High profits from corporations tend to be taxed less than those from partnerships or sole proprietorships.
- Social security: Certain social security schemes are compulsory, optional or non-existent depending on their legal form. For example, the owner of a sole proprietorship is not insured against unemployment and has the option of joining a pension fund on a voluntary basis. In the case of limited liability companies or limited liability companies, on the other hand, the owner is also considered to be an employee and as such is socially insured.
Staff
It is not necessary to have a large number of staff at the start of the activity: you can also start by hiring a hairdresser, a beautician and a manager (administration).
The hairdresser is the one who does the work of cutting, hair styling, dyeing or hair care. This can be assisted by an assistant who takes care of the less complex jobs (washing, drying, combing...).
The beautician is in charge of body care: makeup, hair removal, skin treatments... Hiring such an operator is not mandatory if you have decided to open a salon that provides only hairdressing services.
The manager is responsible for the management of the entire business. It can also be responsible for welcoming clients or answering the telephone to arrange appointments. He can also take care of the management from an administrative point of view, although it is possible to entrust this task to external consultants.
Initial investment
In order to open a salon, you must own a place. You can rent one that was previously a salon, one used for another professional activity or one completely empty.
At Cronoshare, we recommend that you rent a room that used to be a salon in order to significantly reduce costs. This will also make it easier to obtain a license.
The premises must include:
- A reception and waiting room
- A hairdressing salon
- Bathrooms and changing rooms
- A warehouse
Suitability of the building
The renovations will involve both the exterior and the interior of the building. The entire renovation work includes the installation of bathrooms, electrical and water systems, air conditioning, any demolition, masonry, and painting.
The cost of the suitability of the building is around 16000 euros calculated from an empty room. The costs will vary according to the size and structural conditions of the building.
Furnishing
The furniture must be comfortable and reflect the image and needs of the salon. It is divided into:
- Salon furniture: armchairs, toilets, sinks..,
- Furnishing of the reception: sofas, armchairs, chairs, tables, chest...
The furniture must be comfortable for the hairdresser and for the customer, which also will be one of the factors that will differentiate you most from the competition.
All professional furnishings cost about 10000 euros.
Equipment
A number of tools are required to do the job:
- Gowns, combs, gloves, towels.
- Hand mirrors and brushes.
- Hairpins, hair curlers, tweezers, hairnets.
- Cotton, foil, needles, and bowls for dyeing.
- Vaporizers.
- Scissors, razors and various blades.

The cost of the equipment is around 990 euros.
