Children don't read. Part 1.

"Kids don't read, kids don't read..." - This is probably the most frequently discussed educational problem of our time. At the same time, the causes of the phenomenon are either not even mentioned, or not considered, or (if considered) are delusionally drawn to the ears. If we generalize this attraction by the ears, it turns out that modern media outlets are to blame for everything. The first key word is "easier". It is easier to watch than to read; it is easier to listen than to read; it is easier not to do anything at all than to read. The second keyword is "uninteresting. It is not interesting to read. Just as it is not interesting to think, to do. Just don't ask anybody what is "simple" or what is "interesting". In such cases, not only children, but adults as well, are "crazy". After all, some caring parents almost from the cradle teach reading!

Why children do not read

And firstly, and secondly, and thirdly (if there is such a thing) the reason for "not reading" is the same for children (and then - and then - for adults): they do not know the words. That is, they simply do not understand them. Imagine that you write the word "hare" in your computer. Through "e" and "yu". Something like a "bummer". The editor doesn't recognize the word, it's not in the editor. And the computer "marks" it - emphasizes and, sometimes, still beeps. Correct it (if you understand that it is not a "bumper", but a "hare") and write further. Until you write "kulbados" instead of "moonshine" again. But if this happens when you write every word, or at least every second word, if these words that you don't understand are stubbornly emphasized and squeaked with a bad computer voice, you will quickly drop hopeless and meaningless writing. The same thing happens to reading: what is reading, as not rewriting the text on another medium and its subsequent reproduction. Children do not rewrite obscure words and cannot reproduce them. Therefore, they refuse to participate in this senseless process.

Three years ago, we did a simple study. More than a hundred students in grades 10-11 were asked the question: "What is mathematics? One of them answered something quite reasonable. Later, it turned out that he attended our classes at the Gifts and Technology Center. Well, that's what we worked for. Twenty percent of them were frankly delusional - "it's to get change in a shop" and something else is worse. Eighty percent said the same thing word for word: "Mathematics is when the numbers are. Imagine, these are people who have studied "mathematics" for ten years! What did they learn? What should we demand from them? And in general, what is in their minds? Try asking your children this question. And if they say, "Mathematics is a field of science that studies values and ratios," you can have fun like a black woman at a carnival in Rio. Your child has some idea of what he or she should have been doing at school in any field of knowledge. And don't forget to call me - I really want to meet such a child or at least learn about his existence. What can I say about such concepts as "war", "love", "beauty"? ...what is it like for a child or an adult to use words that he has no idea what they mean? It is necessary to be responsible for familiarization with the text! Here is the brain together with the host and "goes into denial". One of the forms of such refusal - "Beauty (and anything else in general) - is for everyone! You can't live and survive in a world where everything is different for everyone.

In general, our children, as a rule, cannot define the most important concepts. That's why they don't understand anything. And to read means to admit it. That is unacceptable from the point of view of self-respect and self-affirmation. And one should be able to define concepts from the point of view of the current educational standard. At school, meeting the requirements of this standard is unfavorable. But it is necessary, it is necessary to carry out! After all, a word without conceptual content, as the outstanding psychologist L.S. Vygotsky said, "there is an empty sound".

It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that children not only do not read, but also do not speak! Impossible and ineffective concussion of air in separate words does not count. Example: I had the chance to listen for a few minutes in the dining room of a college, as a young man at a nearby table temperamentally told something to two girls and a guy. Except for his own names and official words, he used only one word all this time - "shorter". I think the comments are unnecessary. First of all, the lack of words is the lack of ability to convey to another person the content of his thinking, as is transmitted from person to person any product. For this purpose, thinking must be productive. Formation of productive thinking is provided by the technology of intellectual education.
