Pike are also a coveted prey for professional fishermen. It is threatened with natural or artificial lures:
- Live fish
- Spoons
- Corrugated
- Spinnerbait
We fish with strong lines: at least 25-30, and often with steel endings that save our monofilament from the dangerous teeth of pike.
Spinning for pike fishing
Spinning fishing for pike is not an easy task. So, for convenience, let's divide this fishery into two modes, depending on where we cast the line:
- From the shore
- From the boat
- Pike fishing from the shore
Fishing pike by spinning from the shore is a fairly arduous task. It involves a good knowledge of the place where you fish, but above all a good familiarity with the technique of spinning. To catch a pike, you have to think that the movements that we do to our artificial must attract the fish, intrigue it. Only in this way will we make him attack. Fishing action is fundamental. You have to think of our artificial as a real wounded fish that tries to swim but fails, or takes shots, changes direction, goes up to the surface and goes down to the bottom. You have to use a lot of the rod and less the reel.
About the rod, I would say that a good 2.40 or 2.70 meters are ideal.
The pike rod must be strong enough to throw 40 grams and possibly be a two-piece. For the reel, at least one 4000 loaded with a good braid, or a good 25-30 of monofilament. The steel end is a must, to prevent the teeth of the pike from cutting the monofilament.
Artificials for pike spinning fishing are:
- Rotating
- Corrugated
- Spinner bait
- Minnows
We also recommend weights and measures calibrated to the tonnage of the fish, therefore rather large.
Deep-sea fishing for pike
Deep-sea fishing for pike is practised in the cold season. It presupposes a line with strong terminal ballast, with the upper armrest (or game) on which the live fish is triggered, or with sliding ballast above the bait, which is instead attached to the terminal.
For the line, the float is used again, but the line is anchored to the bottom by a large lead. A float takes care to keep it taut, but we must be careful to calibrate well the distance between the latter and the lead, which corresponds to the depth. At a certain point, at a stroke of line, a three-point swivel is added to hook the metal armrest with the fish. The float can be sealed to keep it in the most suitable position, or the wire underneath can carry a few seals.
Pike fishing with the float is carried out in a sedentary manner. Leave the line in the water and the bait free to roam. There is only one drawback: the depth adjustment when changing position.
Another system of bottom fishing of pike involves the use of a final ballast, but without the use of the float. In this way, the depth will not have to be changed every time.
The line with sliding ballast on the mother line is hooked, always with a swivel, the end with the bait. The weight of the olive lead should be light.
The line will be like the previous one, with sliding or fixed lead, as needed.
At the end, where there is a swivel, a rather thin cork stopper with a thin longitudinal incision is applied. This is because, when the pike attacks, because of the sudden movements to the line, it is easy for the cork to come off and, coming to the surface, marks the bite.
Pike fishing with the float
The material needed for floating fishing:
- The rod. Given the large sizes and the large - but short -combactivity of pike, it is useful to use a rod well robust and prepared to throw high grams (40-50 grams).
- The nylon for the mother line will be around 24-26.
- The reel will have to be able to imbobinare 100, 150 meters of nylon of 0.25-0.30. For the mother line, the use of a steel terminal, available in specialized fishing shops, is almost mandatory. The use of a large landing net is very useful to avoid unpleasant inconveniences.
The line is composed of:
- Floating stopper in silicone (choose the large size)
- Sliding ball float from 15 to 20 grams
- Two round plungers
- One olive-shaped lead (10-15 grams)
- Steel terminal
- Live fish (rudd, vendaironi, triotti) (7-15 cm)
First of all, insert the stopper into the nylon; then insert the float with the lightest part visible in the fishing (this is to see it better). At this point, a small ball will stop on the nylon to distance the float at about half a metre. Now, insert the olive lead and then, after tying the steel terminal with the carabiner, proceed to put a plumb line between the carabiner and the olive lead, so that the lead can flow back and forth (about 4).
