Step 1: Aligning the surface

If there are a lot of cracks and dents on the furniture, and you do not have the task to leave the effect of antiquity, we proceed to alignment.

For this purpose we buy putty on a tree (if furniture wooden) and we put its spatula, leveling problem areas. Hold the spatula at an acute angle to the furniture and press tightly to the surface, so that the thickness of the putty layer was not more than 2-3 mm. The putty will dry up approximately a day, after you can remove excesses by means of a sandpaper and, if necessary, to put the second layer.

Another way to get rid of small flaws is to put some furniture wax on them. It can be found in the form of a pencil in any construction shop.

Decorating

What we're gonna need

For the second part of the Marlezon Ballet, we're gonna need

  • fine sandpaper;
  • Hairdryer;
  • A roller;
  • tassels;
  • Paint;
  • lacquer;
  • primer (optional).
  • What we do

Step 1. Preparing the furniture for painting

We walk along the furniture, from which we took off the lacquer and paint, with fine sandpaper and dusting with a hair dryer. Then wipe with a damp cloth and let it dry.

If you decide to preserve the natural appearance of the wood, choose water-based lacquers, which do not create a yellowish effect and dry quickly. The most popular brands are Aqua Zar, Biofa and Borma.

Another interesting option is Danish oil (Rustins, WATCO and Decking oil). It does not require priming and sanding and dries only 30 minutes before applying the second coat.

Step 2: Beautiful

When choosing a paint, pay attention to water-based variants. They dry much faster and smell much less than alkyd paint.

A couple more important points:

  • Some paints require a pre-adhesion primer;
  • Consider the time it takes for the paint to dry and the temperature conditions so that all work is not reworked from scratch;
  • Start painting from the bottom of the furniture and the back side to fill your hand and paint the front side perfectly.

Examples

The chest of drawers.

We've already written about eight ways to restore an old dresser. They are easy to apply not only to the old chest of drawers, but also to the newcomer from Ikea. The only difference is that the new chest of drawers can be wiped and dyed immediately.

A chair

The main problem you're likely to face is the difficulty of erasing old paint. Save patience and paper-based sandpaper so that it is easy to tear it into small pieces to remove the ink between the small parts.

Another subtlety is to correctly assess the condition of the stool. For example, if the legs are damaged, you will have to make a replacement, which is the whole story of searching for material and sawing out a new part. But changing the upholstery and just repaint the chair - quite easy.

A bedside table

That's exactly the story of when the Soviet nightstand can be a good inhabitant of your bedroom.

Tip: If the furniture is in good condition, it is not necessary to remove the old cover. Clean it, walk a little with fine sandpaper and apply one coat of primer. Allow to dry and apply two or three coats of paint. Change the handles, cover the boxes with beautiful wallpaper from the inside - it will be beautiful.

Desktop

Old desks with many drawers made of good wood are definitely the furniture worthy of restoration. Do not be afraid to experiment and paint them in bright colors, change handles.

Restoration of old things, on the one hand, is very troublesome. But on the other hand, they keep the touch of your grandmother, the memories of your childhood. These are the things that create real magic in the house.
