In the 18th century, there was an urgent need for a strong, lightweight horse for use in agriculture and transportation everywhere in Western and Eastern Europe and North America. In England, the USA, France and other countries work in this direction was conducted, here there were separate copies received in casual combinations of fashionable in those days of crossing of various conjugate horses with thoroughbred riding (English) breed. The concept of "trotter" referred to horses running with a fast lynx, but this concept was not yet identified with the breed. Russia, with its vast expanses of land stretching for thousands of kilometers, needed a large, enduring trotting horse more than any other country. At that time, strong, hard-working heels, mezenks, gangs, and other local horses were bouncing along the Russian roads and paths, but they were all too short. On the avenues and bridges in the capital and provincial cities coaches moved large harnessed horses of foreign breeds, sedentary, slow on lynx. Count A.G.Orlov managed to create the necessary breed in Russia. During his stay in the Middle East and in the countries of Western Europe, he purchased a large number of stallions and mares from Turkey, Arabia, Persia, England, Denmark, Spain, and Italy. None of these foreign breeds, however, had desirable qualities in purebred breeding. Among the horses available in a large number of mixed horses, obtained as a result of a variety of crossbreeding, there was also no desired sample. But A.G. Orlov and his assistant V.I. Shishkin, having applied methods of horse-breeding work unprecedented for that time on scales of the organization and depth of plans, have created a new specialized breed - the Oryol trotter in the Khrenov Horse Farm.
In 2005 the organization under the name of non-commercial partnership "Commonwealth of trotting horse breeding in Russia" was created.
