Why allowing a child to skip school is not at all embarrassing or scary

Hello! You are on the channel All or nothing, thanks for reading me! Glad to see you and enjoy reading!

The article is subjective and expresses the personal opinion of the author.

Walking is not good. Somehow, it happened historically that a schoolboy with a note in his diary “didn’t show up for a lesson” is not attracted to knowledge. In the mass consciousness, this is an ignoramus who smokes behind garages and puts the wrong emphasis in the word “ringing”. In the Soviet film “Morning without marks” there is a song with the words: “If there were no schools ... Before that, a person would roll: I would turn into a savage again”. It goes further about animal skin, a club and about mastering food culture: “I would eat raw meat with my hands ...” In this joke, as usual, there is only a fraction of the joke.

Many people still naively believe that if a student goes to school, they will teach him everything there. And it implies a kind of passivity of the students: while you are sitting at your desk, you, like a sponge, absorb the wisdom of centuries, well, not centuries, but teachers.

Its effect is akin to radiation: you just sit in the classroom, and the rays invisibly penetrate you and change the internal structure. To expel from the class is the worst punishment means to deprive the world of knowledge. Sometimes it happens: there are teachers who collect full houses, infect, carry away, impress, make hearts beat faster. But if all the teachers infected with a passion for the subject, would the schoolchildren rejoice when a weekly quarantine is announced at school? Unlikely.

Perhaps even a couple of decades ago, the children really had a poor choice, where to pass the 40 minutes before the bell: behind this garage or next. But now, among all the information, temptations and educational movements, the main skill that should be mastered at least by the end of school is to learn how to choose the best from a bunch of options, make independent decisions, understand your motivation and grow inner discipline. Free attendance of lessons does not in the least interfere with the development of these qualities, and even vice versa - it contributes.

Absenteeism helps to understand what the child is really interested in and prioritize

The child returns from school, mom asks: "What was in the lesson?" And he speaks of the most informative: "I managed to sharpen a pencil and make an origami frog." No, seriously, maybe he could have a more useful activity? One coercion can kill any interest, and we expect the child to be interested in the call only because at a certain time he sat at his desk and folded his arms correctly.

U.S. scientists Edward Decie and Richard Ryan of the University of Rochester have done a bunch of research on motivation and published it in the book Handbook of Self-determination. The conclusion they came to is not new and not very surprising: three basic needs lie at the heart of the internal motivation to study and make mountains: competence, autonomy and contact with the teacher.

Competence, a childish feeling of “I can” at school is not encouraged at all. All because of a rigid system of ratings and neglect of the efforts of the child

Who cares what you tried, that you have progress, that you are better today than yesterday. Two blots - minus a point. Even an excellent student cannot feel free, because a step to the left, a step to the right is again a minus point. Contact with the teacher - how lucky. And the most interesting is autonomy. No man likes to be controlled.

Sometimes children do not like studying just because of the obligation to do the same job in a column. Our traditional version of the school minimizes any autonomy: you are told what to teach, when, how, what color to write with a pen, what clothes to come in and how to raise your hand correctly if you want to say something.

When the truant decides not to attend the lesson, he in any case determines: “useful - not useful”, “flying in - not flying in”, “catch up or what?” Therefore, it is easiest to leave the "unimportant" in the school rank of subjects: technology, secular ethics, ecology.

If a child simply goes to all the items because they are on his schedule, then one of two things means: either he is a primary school student and has not yet figured out what is happening, or he accepted the inevitable evil and learned to engage in underground activities, imitating external attention .

Absenteeism teaches the child to make choices and learn independently (during absenteeism)

The mere presence in the lesson does not promise that the child will delve into what is happening. Especially if this is happening - languid answers at the blackboard and a monotonous story about the classification of chordates. A person will learn only what is interesting to him and what he wants to learn. If a daughter goes to classes for months and does not see any meaning in chemical formulas, most likely the problem is not that she is truant, but in teaching.

Various new technologies, for example, flipped learning, are just about removing the teacher-broadcaster and putting as much practical work on the student’s shoulders as possible. When you yourself determine how many sources to shovel for occupation and what exactly to please your comrades with, there is a chance to see the point even in the outdoor games of the lancelet (primitive sea animals - Ed.).

And the goal, in general, is not in the knowledge that the student must swallow. The more information is around, the less clarity is what exactly these curly-haired guys who will go to get work in about 15 years should remember, Skills to learn by themselves, make choices, hear and understand themselves are key competencies in the present century. What, for example, is said in an interview by the developer of the School of Innovative Pedagogy, the head of the NGO Game Education Andrei Komissarov:

“The main skills for modern students are the ability to learn independently and work with the unknown. They include systemic thinking, adaptability, management of one’s own senses ... ”

Notice nothing is said about memorizing Coulomb's law by Monday. In general, the child who said: “Mom, Coulomb’s law puts great pressure on me, I would like to reflect on it in silence and not go to physics,” is better prepared for the challenges of the future. At least he trusts his mother, tries to listen to himself and make his own decision.

Absenteeism develops the internal discipline of the child and helps to become more independent

In order not to go to the lesson, the child must have some good reason: a contagious disease, a forty-degree frost or the invasion of alien invaders, but rather all together. Otherwise, shame and shame on truants, and may they have the same guilty face as the person who was caught stealing tights in a supermarket.

And why, in fact, a good reason cannot be going to ballet, solving a programming problem or organizing a strike in the dining room? A student friend of mine did not attend the session, because he was carried away by Dostoevsky and sat in Lenka without any relief. And the Karamazovs helped him more to deal with the attitude towards humanity than surrender of offsets. In the educational part, however, they thought differently, but the fact is that our internal interest, which sooner or later will certainly come to light, will play a more serious role than the tasks imposed from above. The children also have a love of knowledge and a desire for search, and we only need a little faith in them.

The famous teacher and philosopher Alexander Nill writes in his book Summerhil - Education of Freedom:

“You cannot force a child to learn music or anything else without suppressing his will and thereby, at least to some extent, without turning him into a limp adult. You make them people who meekly accept the status quo, convenient for a society that needs people who obediently sit at boring tables, hustle around in shops, and automatically jump into the suburban train at 8.30. In short, for a society sitting on the frail shoulders of a small trembling person - to the death of a frightened conformist. "

Nill established free school attendance at his school, because he believed that the main task of parents and teachers was to help a person become an independent person, and not to ensure attendance at six lessons plus a class hour.

We are often focused on the outside of the case: was in the lesson or was not, what I got, where is the letter. And less often we ask: how do you like a teacher? Did you get any interesting tasks on the control? Was this paragraph worrying you? We try to squeeze people with external discipline, because we are afraid that without it a person will disappear, and internal discipline will not grow. What if we make the scope wider and allow our, not the most stupid children in the Universe, to decide more than they decide now? It is unlikely that they will burn the hallway and will dance naked in the ashes. In any case, we are always there.

But there are alternative schools, where children of different ages study at will and without time limits. They vote with their feet, leave classes or, conversely, sit on them. It is somehow ridiculous to walk in such a place, and it’s not customary to sleep in class. Perhaps it is there that those mysterious children who like to do written exercises sit. Unless, of course, on the other hand the door is not propped up by their anxious dad and mom.
