Logical errors of thinking. Part 2

Competition is the Judgment of one's own value solely by comparing oneself to others.

• I'm not good at it because there are a lot of people who do it better than me.

Winning is everything.

Mystification is the Explanation of physical phenomena in a metaphysical or esoteric way.

* Memories of past lives obtained by age regression hypnosis are evidence of a previous life.

• Many of the events recorded in the old Testament regarding the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt were caused by the comet that later became the planet Venus.

* Out-of-body experiences prove that life continues after death.

* The metallic alloy nitinol can be obtained by psychic energy.

* People can observe objects at great distances, even if they cannot see them directly (long-range vision).

• Strips in Peru, were landing sites for space ships carrying ancient astronauts.

* The blueness of the sky, the twinkling of the stars, the Northern lights and solar activity are caused by the energy of Orgon, the main driving force of life.

* Experiences of the mother after the day of conception will leave its mark on the subconscious of the fetus.

Correlations equal to causation-the Assumption that if two variables are correlated, one is the cause of the other.

* Subconscious self-anger is the cause of any depression.

* Airplanes create fear, because fear only comes to me in airplanes.

* Thunder causes lightning.

Ignoring refuting arguments is the Assumption that all that is needed to prove a theory is supporting arguments. (This is not enough; it must be shown that the arguments in favor of the theory are stronger than the arguments against it.)

* Since some subjects have shown a high search success rate in psychological research, extrasensory perception can be considered proven.

* Because monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclics, and alprazolam reduce some of the panic reactions of clients, all panic disorders are purely biological in nature, and psychotherapy of any kind is unnecessary.

Over-socialized thinking - people who are Excessively conformed to their culture thoughtlessly and uncritically accept prevailing social attitudes and basic beliefs characteristic of their culture.

* Spare the rod-spoil the child.

* Low self-esteem is at the root of all psychological problems.

Self-righteousness is the Belief that good intentions are more important than outcomes.

• But I just wanted to help you.

* Extremism in the struggle for freedom is not a Vice.

* Cruelty is virtuous if it is aimed at eradicating injustice.

* This is fair, because I had good intentions.

Sidestepping is Replacing the subject matter with irrelevant, irrelevant conversation in order to mask the weakness of one's own position. These strategies are better known as"distractions."

(and went trash)

1. Dishonest questions. Suddenly ask a series of questions, so that opponent forced respond to them, and stop argumentation.

"Why are you criticizing me for being late? Have you had a hard day? Why is this so important to you? Are you having trouble with your PMS again? Have you seen a doctor about this? What else are you really angry about?»

1. An indication of other people's shortcomings. "If you're accusing me of being fat, then what's that pull-up belt around your waist doing?»

2. Archaeological charges.

3. Emotional language. Trying to piss someone off with emotionally charged phrases. "You're so stupid and ugly and stupid that you don't know a damn thing about anything!»

4. Approach "judo". Excessive acquiescence with the other person's discontent, so that he is forced to take it back. "You're right! I have been unkind to you and cruel. I have a really difficult character. I don't know how you get along with me."

5. Fit of rage. Trying to lead people away by getting angry at them. Most people will react to anger and drop their positions. "How dare you criticize me! You have no right to do that!»

6. Innocent ignorance. Complete denial that there are any problems at all."I have no idea what you're talking about. I haven't had a drink all night.»

Forewarned disagreement-Rephrasing someone's point of view in such a way that it would be difficult or embarrassing to disagree with it.

* Everyone should know that…

• Any fool can understand…

• It's obvious to anyone with brains that…

* Since you don't know anything about it, it's clear that…

•(I'll add a quote from one of my philosophy professors: "Since you've all probably read such and such a work by Nietzsche, do you remember what he says…»)

Tried and true — the Claim that a belief is true simply because it represents traditional views (similar to over-socialized thinking, but appeals to tradition rather than what is popular at the moment).

• What was good for my father is good for me.

• This is our policy.

* So did always.

To impress with large numbers is to Assume that a thought is true if many people believe it.

* Fifty million Americans can't be wrong!

* Counseling doesn't help because I can think of ten people who went to a therapist and none got better.

* According to the latest study, hundreds of doctors recommend…

* Keep up with the times! Everyone who is anything believes it.

A solved question is a Sentence that sounds as if it asserts causality, but in fact merely paraphrases the judgment in another form (a kind of tautology in which any question is taken for granted).

I don't fly planes because I'm a coward (the definition of "coward" includes avoiding things unnecessarily).

* Everyone who is so anxious must be crazy (the definition of a crazy person was any person who possessed uncontrollable emotions).

* Narcissistic personality is caused by egocentrism.

Appeal to ignorance-the Assumption that if you do not understand something, then no one can understand it.

I can't understand why I get depressed. It must be bad luck.

* All this conditioning stuff is such nonsense. All you need to overcome fears-is to take the bull by the horns and show a little willpower and courage. (yeah, what bull, where is he? and courage is usually taken from Goodwin in a Golden saucer)
