In the life of purebred dog owners, a moment occurs when the question arises of attending a certified zootechnical event of the Kennel Federation. Simply put - dog shows. What should a novice dog breeder and his pet know about the exhibition?

Firstly, any exhibition is a kind of competition and you need to prepare for it in advance. To begin with, it would be nice to find a specialist in displaying animals at the exhibition - a handler. A specialist handler will certainly help with tips on growing and preparing a future star. Some breeds require specific coat preparation or training, which is not within the power of the wearer. However, if you wish, you can learn from the experience and deal with the dog on your own. Many cynological professionals themselves were once in the place of a novice who knows nothing.

Secondly, you need to familiarize yourself with the registration procedure for the exhibition. It is exclusively preliminary and ends, as a rule, 10 days before the day of the event. The calendar of exhibitions, as well as registration rules and regulations on holding can always be found on the website of the Russian Cynological Federation (RKF) in the relevant sections. Comprehensive information will be provided in the organizing committee of the exhibition and in the Club.

After registering and making sure that the data on your dog and payment are received, wait until the exact schedule of the exhibition is drawn up, then contact the organizer and find out the exact time of examination of your breed. This will save you from having to wait a long time for your turn.

However, you need to arrive no later than an hour before the appointed time in order to calmly walk the dog, undergo veterinary control, registration (arrival) and find the site (ring) on which your breed will be exposed (there may be several such sites). To pass the veterinary control, the original veterinary passport for the dog is required, with the current mark of vaccination against rabies. Nonresidents also need a certificate from a veterinary clinic, an established sample. Without these documents a dog is not allowed to the show.

What you need to take with you to the dog show

  1. Documents for the dog - a copy of the puppy’s metric or pedigree, the original veterinary passport and a certificate (nonresident), a receipt for payment of the registration fee;
  2. A bowl for water and a bottle of drinking water without gas for the dog;
  3. A rug or blanket on which your dog can rest without stain;
  4. In addition to everyday leashes and collars, a muzzle is required (for large and aggressive dogs), as well as the so-called “ring” leash recommended for this breed;
  5. A roll of paper towels, disposable bags and a pack of wet wipes is not a case of "unforeseen situations";
  6. A few slices of your favorite treat to encourage your dog.

It should be remembered that for aggressive behavior, both in the ring and outside the exhibition, the punishment is very severe - disqualification. Moreover, disqualification may concern both the dog and the owner. If you plan to continue to participate in exhibitions, then you should carefully study the rules of behavior at such events in order to avoid unpleasant situations.

Since the start of the examination of your breed, you and your dog should be close to the entrance to the ring and carefully listen to the manager inviting the next participants. Late participants may be excluded from the examination. In the ring, the dogs line up according to the assigned numbers - they are duplicated in the exhibition catalog. Further, at the command of the judge, the participants begin a group or single movement in a circle, in a straight line or diagonally. Moreover, the owner of the dog should not obscure the review for the judge. For small breeds, a special inspection table is provided. Participants are required to comply with the orders of the judge and the ring team, without entering or leaving the ring without permission.

After the examination of your breed, you need to pick up a diploma signed by the judge from the ring brigade confirming the assessment received. If in the ring the judge considered it necessary to give you verbal recommendations about your dog - listen carefully and thank. The opinion of a professional always matters. Along with the diploma, you receive a leaflet with a brief (or detailed) description of your dog as a representative of the breed. Be sure to save it for submission to the Club and for comparison with descriptions from other exhibitions.

And the most important point: be especially attentive to your dog during the exhibition. Cheer her, caress, praise once again, give a treat for good behavior or for at least not rushing around in complete panic. Try to fix at the dog, and at the same time at home, as much as possible positive emotions associated with the exhibition. Turn it into a holiday!
