Notes Of The Young Writer

Wolf's legacy.8.

Greetings my dear reader! Make yourself at home. I really hope that my stories will help you escape from the problems and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of my fantasies.

Chapter 2. White Wolf hypostasis: from early to final

"We deliberately left unanswered whether the White Wolf was Bolto's father or some kind of ephemeral wolf spirit. The White Wolf scene is still my favorite scene in the film, and thanks to the great music of James Horner, which accompanies the scene, I have chills on my body.

We wanted to keep the scene mystical and vague - is this a real event or some kind of hallucination that Bolto is experiencing? That's why we made sure that the White Wolf remains silent and unexplained. The White Wolf is the embodiment of Bolto's inner voice, urging him to accept his wolf nature and to understand that it is power and not shame, to use the part of the nature that he was always ashamed of and from which he was running away - this is the lesson he learns at this meeting, real or not.
(By the way, if the White Wolf is really his father, why didn't he help his son to raise the antitoxin on the mountain?). Simon Wells

What did we learn about the White Wolf from the original Bolto movie? This male character, he can be interpreted as Bolto's father (yes, we also learned from the previous chapter that according to the version of the first film Bolto's mother was a Husky, and the father was a wolf) or as a spirit from the legends of the north, but in fact is a metaphor for accepting the self and embodiment of both the wolf half of Bolto and the inner power of Bolto. In other words, quite a multifaceted character-image with several identities, each of which is quite well in harmony with each other and does not contradict the semantic part of the scene.

Nevertheless, my old dream came true - to find the storyboards of the scene with the White Wolf. Everything turned out to be even better - to find early versions of this scene. It was a real splash of joy and delight. I am very eager to the initial, initial and early versions of the script or scenes in the movies and cartoons, because it is very interesting to compare the early and final versions, what shades and mood and meaning are embedded in them, how they differ from each other, and where the scene turned out to be more powerful and heartfelt.

I present a small analysis-comparison of the scene with the White Wolf in early versions and in the final. And what predominant shades this character acquires in each of the versions, how he behaves and interacts with the protagonist.

As we know, the White Wolf essentially has three large hypostases that have the right to exist and a leading role: the wolf half (inner power), which helps the spirit-voice and, strange as it may seem, the father's figure (however, in the cartoon the father's figure or the role of the teacher-teacher-friend plays the hussak Boris). However, the early versions (at the moment two versions are known) have their own differences in terms of script and interaction, as well as moods. There are three main differences between the early version and the final version:

First, of course, it is the presence of an ending and the final scene in the early version (in both two old versions). Here I can confidently say that the early versions win over the final version, because the only thing I didn't like in the final version of this masterpiece episode - it just breaks off on the stage of fighting Bolto with the White Wolf in the storm and goes sharply to the dog sled. In the early variants of their joint wailing continues, the cameras fly over, rare rays of the sun break through, the White Wolf dissolves and disappears into the blizzards, and the reborn, mature, joyful and regained inner strength and peace Bolto tries to find the White Wolf, looks around, but never finds it, but he hears the echoing howling of the mysterious snow-white wanderer and supports his howling in the middle of the snow, and finally looks out the sun, exposing the statue wolf's shadow Bolto. The final chord to the episode is simply stunning, charming and beautifully executed. An atmosphere of loneliness and hope, rebirth and unity, cold and desolation, mystery and a feeling of gentle awakening after a good night's sleep. Also here is a much more transparent hint that the White Wolf is not real or alive, you remain in a pleasant confusion "Where is he? What was that? Uh, "awesome!" but on an intuitive level, you understand everything and just enjoy the beauty and mysteriousness. It is a pity that this magnificent final scene is not in the final version.
