Hello! You are on the channel All or nothing, thanks for reading me! Glad to see you and enjoy reading!
The article is subjective and expresses the personal opinion of the author.
My experience as a head of USE courses and just a tutor in mathematics and physics with great experience tells me that on the appeal of USE points, the thoughtful offensive tactics of "heavy artillery" are always more effective than single "partisan sorties." Get a notarized power of attorney for a teacher or tutor, and you will not regret it. Here are three reasons to take an experienced mentor with you on an appeal.
1. The teacher always knows more than the student
Yes, the teacher always knows his subject better than the student, because his knowledge goes beyond the school curriculum. Each subject has a higher education and, of course, the range of his academic knowledge and understanding of a specific scientific discipline is much wider.
Do not forget that on appeal under the law two members of the Conflict Commission always communicate with the graduate. This rule was invented ostensibly in order to maintain the objectivity of the appeal procedure, but in reality the discussion is between two experienced professionals and the average teenager. It's like inviting two heavyweight boxers against an amateur athlete (who just wants to become a professional, by the way) in a boxing ring, and even in lightweight. Even David with two Goliaths, most likely, could not cope.
It is also important to understand that the teacher is very well oriented not only in the tasks of the exam, but also in the assessment criteria. Why is a teenager unable to objectively “hold the blow” on all fronts on appeal? Because for a long time he solved exam tasks, but did not check them. Of course, graduates are always asked to carefully study the criteria and understand why they earn one or another point, but only one who has evaluated the exam papers on existing criteria many times can have a real understanding of all the nuances of accruing or lowering USE scores.
Any school teacher and tutor knows the criteria for assessing the exam in their subject by heart. And this is not an exaggeration! What can we say about the members of the Conflict Commission? They certainly know them by heart. However, this does not prevent them from sometimes interpreting a particular point not in favor of the student. Only a professional can feel this discrepancy in the conversation and indicate bias.
2. An adult will help block psychological pressure
Recently, many graduates go on appeal with their parents. This is not infantilism! Personally, I respect this decision. Knowing what constitutes the appeal procedure for the Unified State Exam scores, I understand very well how the support of loved ones can help “hold the blow”. The only problem is that parents, tuning in to protect their children, are not ready for the fact that they will not have to defend a specific person, but his examination work.
To sometimes wedge into the discussion between your child and members of the Conflict Commission, you need to understand what is being discussed. Of course, you will feel when psychological pressure will be put on your child, but you won’t be able to reflect and block this pressure, because it will always be implicated in some nuances of the graduate’s specific written work. Only the student or an experienced teacher can understand what this is about and comment on.
The student’s arguments are sometimes not enough, because the teenager can get confused and agitated
This is where the reliable shoulder of the mentor comes in handy.
I already compared the appeal of the exam with a boxing match. Recently, when talking about the Unified State Examination, more and more often I get analogies with sports. If the removal from the exam for the cheat sheet is tantamount to disqualification for doping, then the story with the appeal of the points is similar to clarifying the circumstances of the appointment of a free throw in football, basketball or hockey.
Everyone knows how free throws can sometimes change the whole scenario of a match and even the final score. In sports, there is a strict judge who must be as objective and impartial as possible. On the appeal of the Unified State Exam points, in theory, the members of the Conflict Commission perform the same function, but it is unlikely that their work can always be called objective and devoid of personal motivation. They obviously do not “play” on the student’s side. Even if you come across super-objective “judges” on the USE appeal, the organization of this event, namely its rules, was originally built not in favor of the graduate.
Members of the Conflict Commission prepare for an appeal in advance, they have the opportunity to see the tasks, and the correct answers, and errors corrected in the work. Not a single graduate can prepare for a substantive discussion, since he is deprived of such an opportunity.
If you think about it, the psychological pressure on the graduate begins long before the appeal, when he realizes that in two days he needs to prepare to defend his work, not knowing where and what mistakes he made. In real sport, this, thank God, is impossible.
Imagine that the heroes of the sensational film "Upward Movement" would not have the opportunity to demand the use of extra time. What if the referee said: “There was no timer error! I know this, and you don’t have to prove the opposite! My last word, as it is spelled out in the rules. As I say, it will be so. ” And there would not be these fantastic three seconds! How often on appeal does a graduate remain without extra points just because of the inability to prepare in advance? Unfortunately, no one keeps such statistics.
There is only one way out of this difficult situation - to use the maximum time for preparation for the appeal and, if possible, fully restore the tasks and the correct answers to your option, in order to understand where the points were unjustly reduced. It is not for me to explain to you that this titanic work can be done qualitatively only with an experienced teacher. I am sure that it is this preparatory stage before the appeal of the USE scores that decides the outcome of the final “duel” by 80%.
3. Double motivation to “beat off" legitimate points will give the best result
If you decide to appeal, this is a small victory. The desire to understand, restore justice, understand your mistakes, having met them face to face, and reconcile yourself with the bitterness of defeat in case of failure - all these are the hallmarks of a strong personality.
I am sure that every graduate who came to the appeal of the USE scores has a sincere desire to change the scenario of the situation. Each of them wants to put a "bullet" in the long history of preparing for the exam. And everyone is sure that his knowledge is at least one point, but better than those that were given to him during the test. Well, they have every right to do so; no one should deprive them of this opportunity. At the same time, we must not forget that there is another person who also put a lot of effort into a qualitative result and spent a lot of time with you - this is your teacher or tutor. Who, if not he, is capable of truly assessing the level of your knowledge?
A teacher who has been preparing you for the exam for a whole year (or even more) has his own very powerful motivation to help you return undeservedly reduced points. For him, these are your total points, do not forget about it. Inform your teacher in advance that you would very much like to go on an appeal (in case of disputed points) with him. After all, this is your overall result, so it is logical to bring the matter to an end together.
Here again, as in sports, a real coach should be there, no matter what happens
If you fail to agree with your teacher or tutor, you can always urgently connect an experienced teacher from outside to prepare for the appeal (on the recommendation or conclude an agreement with USE courses). Two days for a good tutor - this is the period for which he is able to understand the situation and build a detailed line of defense. But, of course, it’s best for your mentor to “fight” in an honest duel. The members of the Conflict Commission will immediately realize, without further ado, that two trained “players” came to them, able to masterfully play the “Sicilian defense” and set up only to win.
