There is no such thing as a perfect writing space — what is real is the place that you can call yours. Daydreaming is rarely a waste of time, but rather than fantasizing about your perfect writing space, you should create it. Your existing space can be adapted to feel more comfortable and inspiring — a place you look forward to spending your time in.

Fostering Positivity

Dedicating an area or room (if available) to writing is beneficial. You can use classical conditioning to train your brain to understand that when you are in that space, you are meant to be writing. If you are prone to feeling anxious every time you enter your writing space, that is what you will unintentionally train your brain to feel before sitting down to write. It is similar to wanting to avoid certain foods or drinks after getting sick from consuming them. Your body associates the two with each other for a long period of time after the incident occurs.

Remember, when you immerse yourself in your writing space, you are there to do what you love. Associating a positive attitude with your writing space will help you to happily anticipate spending your time there. It is important to feel positive when you sit down to write. It does not matter if it is yet another cover letter or a piece of prose, it is important to feeling successful as a writer.

If you are able to create a writing space that is removed from where you spend much of your other time, preferably behind a closed door, it is wise to do so. Being able to shut out the world is what Stephen King recommends in order to be a successful writer.

If you have already established yourself a lady or man cave, it may not be the best option to serve as your writing space if it is associated with other activities. Clear out all items that may be a distraction and redesign your area to be focused solely on writing.

Decorate to Inspire

Consider what inspires you and use it to decorate your space with photos and various items to feed your creative mind. Only bring items into your space that will spark creativity and propel you to write with more passion.

Are you a lover of the outdoors and nature? Cover the walls with maps of areas you long to visit, pieces of rock, feathers, and bones you may have found on your adventures to remind you of the places you hold dear. If you can’t write outside, then bring the outside into your space, or perhaps place your space in front of the window to be able to communicate with your muse at any moment you choose.

Don’t know where to start when it comes to decorating? Find decorating blogs to follow, and let inspiration stem from what others are doing. By having plenty of sources to draw ideas from, you’re sure to find a style that will fit you and your needs.

Here are some items to consider incorporating into your writing space:

  • Additional lighting that will allow you to turn off harsh overhead lights
  • Plants to help bring fresh air into your space
  • Bookshelves for reference books and journals
  • Pillows, shawls, and blankets for varying degrees of comfort and warmth
  • A small speaker or noise-canceling headphones for ambient sounds or music

Creating Comfort

In addition to igniting creativity, creating a spot where you are both physically and emotionally comfortable is essential to the success of your writing. Think about your physical comfort from head to toe. Sitting for long periods of time can cause you different kinds of pain.

If you are straining your back or your knees because you have poor posture or are in desperate need of a new chair, fix it immediately. Treating yourself to an ergonomic chair can be a total game changer for your writing space. It will enable you to be able to sit for longer periods of time, which can be beneficial to meeting your word count goals each day.

Minimalist Style

If you easily overwhelmed by clutter and are unable to work if items are disorganized, go minimalist with the design and decoration of your writing space. If there is less to fuss with, there is less time to be wasting that could be spent writing.

The following are some ways to minimize clutter on or around your writing space:

  • Install shelving on the wall to hold folders, notebooks, or knick-knacks to keep them off your desk.
  • Invest in a desk with drawers for storage to keep needed documents accessible and organized.
  • Organize and tie cords together to avoid bundles of loose cords from getting tangled around other items.
  • Give daily used items a designated space on your desk — coffee mug, laptop, smartphone, water bottle, and notebook. Anything else needs to find a different home on another surface.

If you tend to feel anxious or tightly wound when you sit at your computer, try adopting aromatherapy in your space. Soothing scents such as lavender can help to relax you, or if you want to feel invigorated, switch it out for orange essential oils instead.

Once you have established a defined writing space that is solely devoted to honing your craft, you’ll know it. It will feel refreshing when you walk into it. It will make you excited to let the words flow. Ideally, it will be a place you look forward to spending a few hours out of every week.

Take note of times that you feel uncomfortable and what caused it, then try your best to go about fixing it. Sometimes the writing space you have created will need to evolve and shift, so don’t expect it to stay the same forever. Be welcoming to change. No one can tell you what you need to prepare yourself except you. Listen to that writer’s voice inside of you to help lead the way.
