The importance of throwing our surfcasting rod the right way
- The name surfcasting comes to mean "thrown on the waves". This translation indicates that the most important part of this modality is precisely the power that each angler has over the cast so that it is as correct as possible, it is the action that gives a name to the style. If it is done in an ideal way, it is very probable that you can have total control over the catches, even if we do not forget that throwing as far as possible is not always a guarantee of getting the best specimens.
- In fact, the most important objective in surfcasting fishing is to get as far as possible. If it can be thrown far away, there will be a greater probability of multiplying the number of captures, which, of course, are at a certain distance from us, with our backs to ourselves. For this reason, many of the fans of this type of fishing practice in controlled areas, where they know they will find specimens, in order to master the technique.
- But, of course, it is not only important to make long casts, but they must also be precise. It is useless to reach a difficult area if we are not precise and place all our rods in different places. The angler can play with the force that he exerts on his rod, in fact, it is even entertaining, but in a controlled way.
Best casts in surfcasting fishing
- Each one can make a specific type of cast because it is up to the user to decide, but there are already previously defined techniques that it is not worth knowing. In the following section, we will be able to know those that allow making fishing casts in the most distant surfcasting.
- Mastering the throwing techniques requires a good dose of practice. In fact, in order to be able to control these gestures and carry them out, the recommendation is that their practice is continuous. It may seem that learning them is slow, but really the distance at which we make the casts will increase progressively with each lesson. If you feel up to it, don't forget to try some fishing simulators that there are for computer and console.
- Finally, it should be noted that there are variables that can condition our release positively or negatively. These are, for example, the distance from the lead to the rod tip and the weight of the lead. Each angler will be in charge of selecting the weight and the optimum distance for them according to their shot.
What types of fishing casts exist in surfcasting and how to make them step by step?
- Nowadays, there are as many casts as there are anglers dedicated to surfcasting since each person chooses the way in which they want to make them and these are always impregnated with small or big differences. But there are three very basic throwing techniques that every angler must know, at least to then personalize them as best suits everyone.
We are going to detail, step by step, each one of them:
Traditional cast (above the head)
- Above-head rod throwing. This is the easiest way to cast and is therefore also the most commonly used. The following tips should be followed to perform the shot perfectly.
- In the first place, we must face the sea with the rod placed above our head. It must also be placed horizontally.
- We make the cast with a sudden movement and an approximate angle of 45 degrees in relation to the sea, trying to stop it in a dry way. This will give more strength to the rod.
- This type of launch can be done both standing and moving. Therefore, each angler should practice it a little and decide the easiest way to do it.
- To be able to carry it out correctly it is necessary to be placed giving the back to the sea, with the rod in horizontal position and towards the right or the left depending on the hand with which we work.
- It is necessary that the lead is supported in the sand; in fact, it must be placed in the same line as the rod.
- We begin by making a turn, as coordinated as possible, lifting the rod up and braking it dry at an angle that is much greater than we do in a traditional cast, always depending on our capabilities, of course.
- The course he has to follow is very long and, therefore, the lead is fired at an enormous speed.
- The only thing that is required for this casting technique to be correct is that the rod is of good quality and not too soft as it is loaded enough and we could break it if it is not the most appropriate.
Pendulum Lance
- This technique is perhaps the most elaborate and complicated of all. But, if we manage to master it, for us the launch will be a child's business and will lead to guaranteed success. In fact, it will be the type of cast that will allow us to achieve the greatest distances and, therefore, to be seen by a greater number of specimens that may be interested in us.
- To begin to do so, we must place ourselves with our backs to the sea and with the rod vertical, slightly inclined forward.
- We must take the lead to begin to oscillate, imitating the movement of a pendulum. This is the obvious reason why this name is given to the type of cast.
- At the moment when the lead is at the end of the movement, it is necessary to make the rod rotate in coordination with the movement of our own body. This makes that we direct the lead towards the zone that we have decided previously.
- Finally, the rod must be stopped again in dry so that all the energy generated is released.
- For this type of cast, we recommend the rods a little stiffer.
