iOS 13.1 adds CPU slowdown to the 2018 iPhone lineup as battery wear

Apple Corporation was one of the first to add a feature to the OS for its mobile devices, which the network called "planned smartphone obsolescence. The point is that the speed of the device slows down as the battery of the gadget wears down. Last year, Apple and Samsung were even fined 10 million and 5 million euros, respectively, for this innovation.

Both companies recognized the existence of this function, after which they received a large number of lawsuits from buyers of gadgets, who considered themselves deceived. Now Apple has added trottling for the entire line of its phones in 2018. The function was activated after the release of iOS 13.1. Now the more the battery will wear out, the slower the devices will work.

The fact that the devices were released only a year ago is surprising, and trottling is already working. Batteries of the majority of last year's models haven't had time to wear out enough to show up in any way in their work. In this case, the iPhone XR continues to be sold at retail (XS and XS Max are no longer on sale at Apple), so that trottling is activated for the phone, which is more than relevant.

There are several opportunities to get rid of the slowdown devices. The simplest thing is to update the gadget, i.e. buy a new device. However, this is a very costly way, plus next year the company can activate trottling for this year's models.

The second way is to replace the battery after a noticeable wear and tear. Apple Corporation is trying to attract as many owners of its devices as possible to its own service centers for battery replacement. Officially, the company does not recommend replacing the battery in unauthorized service centers.

The third option - to remove the trottling manually, which can be done in the settings of the phone. The processor and the entire system then begin to work at the same speed, but the time of autonomous operation is reduced, the more wear and tear of the battery, the shorter the operating time.

Earlier, the company stated that for modern models of devices (at the time when the statement was made, these were the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, iPhone X) trottling is not a necessity.

These and subsequent models use advanced hardware and software to accurately assess the device's power requirements and the ability of the battery to deliver the right amount of power.
But after the release of iOS 12.1, the support page revealed that the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X may experience problems with too much battery power and suddenly shut down. That's why they need the same slow-down feature when the battery becomes obsolete, which has caused such dissatisfaction among users. That is, trottling.

The company has added that the performance of the devices is not affected too much because they have "advanced design and software". However, the company added data on how the new software affects the performance of the devices.

As it turned out, the battery charge level and voltage, plus the ambient temperature, were used to calculate the deceleration. The colder it gets outdoors, the slower the processor gets.

The cost of replacing the battery at Apple's service centers is $69 for last year's models and $49 for this year's models - in case the warranty on the device has already expired.

By the way, in February of this year, the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, Industry, Innovation Development and Entrepreneurship drew attention to the pavement of Apple devices.

Officials even proposed to check the corporation for a deliberate slowdown in the performance of their devices in order to artificially increase demand for new phone models.
