Сегодня поговорим о нюансах употребления apart from..., except (for) и besides: в каких случаях все три выражения используются в одном и том же значении; когда корректно в выражении except (for) опустить for, а когда этого не стоит делать и т.д. К сожалению, эти слова сбивают с толку и немного сложны в использовании.
1. Besides (кроме) обычно добавляет, т.е. плюс (+).
Besides the violin, he plays the piano and the flute. ( He plays 3 instruments.)
I'm sorry but can't come today, I have to get up early tomorrow, besides I'm tired. - Извини, но я не смогу сегодня прийти, мне нужно завтра рано вставать, к тому же я устала. (Вставать + устала)
Besides me, there were plenty of people. - Помимо меня, там еще была куча людей. (Я + другие )
2. Except (за исключением) это вычитает, т.е. 'без ', минус (-)
I like all musical instruments except the violin.
The essay is good except for the spelling mistakes.
I don't take any medicine except aspirin for colds.
Nothing more to do now except wait.
- except for - обычно употребляется перед именным словосочетанием.
I cleaned the house except for the bathroom.
The Garden was empty except for one small bird.
- except (for) после слов all, any, etc
После обобщающих слов all, any, every, no, everything, anybody, nowhere, nobody, whole обычно for опускается.
I've cleaned all the rooms except (for) the bathroom.
He ate everything on his plate except (for) the beans.
Nobody came except (for) James and Conor.
НО!!! если except for стоит перед обобщающим словом, то for остается на своем месте.
Сравните: Except for James and Conor, nobody came.
- мы опускаем for, когда except используется перед предлогами и союзами [+that/when/where/if]
Freddie would tell me nothing about what he was writing, except that it was to be a Christmas play. -
Ida would not speak to him except to answer questions.
He is good-looking except when he smiles.
This room is no use except as a storeroom.
The holiday was nice except that there wasn't enough snow.
- except + verb: he does nothing except sleep
Обычная конструкция do ... except + infinitive without to
He does nothing except eat all day.
I'll do everything for you except cook.
В других случаях употреблется форма V.-ing
She is not interested in anything except skiing.
You needn't worry about anything except having a great time.
3. Apart from ... можно употреблять и в значении besides (в добавок) и в значении except (за исключением).
Apart from the violin, he plays the piano and the flute. (=Besides the violin ...)
I like all musical instruments apart from the violin. (= Except for the violin.)
4. После no, nobody, nothing и похожих отрицательных слов все три выражения имеют одно и то же значении.
He has nothing besides/except/ apart from his salary. (=He only has his salary.)
