The issue of choosing an attitude to life lies at the heart of major societal concerns as struggling against unfavourable personal circumstances is supported by many, however, facing fate is sometimes considered as a more reasonable approach in contrast to futile actions. I am in favour of fighting for personal well-being as, in the long run, this is the only way to progress at both an individual and global level.

On the one hand, proponents of the former position appeal to a wide range of opportunities as a result of overcoming obstacles and I agree. This is because only by leaving their comfort zone will people move up the evolution ladder, in terms of biological and mental development. In other words, if it were not for this persistent fight, humanity would not have achieved the heights that can be witnessed at present. A prime example is a successful experience of surviving in the Ice Age, when the threat of extinction pushed primitive people towards devising previously unknown tools and skills.

On the other hand, opponents of life’s hurdles surmounting base their opinion on possible psychological side effects that these futile attempts may bring, while expected benefits are infinitesimal. Not only can a discrepancy between the expected outcome and the reality deeply frustrate a person, but it is also irrevocably tied to depression, discouraging any further endeavours. To illustrate this, a vast majority of mental disorders are deeply rooted in such futility. However, human’s psyche is known to be adaptive and on no account should this feature as a key to sustainable development be ignored.

In conclusion, though people may vary in their opinions, I am convinced that it is high time people took a stand on the need to be proactive by battling against the inevitable complications that life brings for humans. The reason for this is that it is only the can-do mentality that has brought humanity to the current evolutionary stage.
