Northern lights

Why would you leave your soft comfortable bed at night? To see this beautiful natural phenomenon, of course!

Watching northern lights has already turned into a whole direction of tourism.

The best place to watch is, without a doubt, Lapland. Why is it? Everything is very simple. Lapland occupies a large area, but at the same time it has a very small population density (which means that the lights of cities will not drown out the brightness of colors).

On average there can be up to 200 days a year when you can see it. According to statistics, in the Kilpisjärvi area, under the condition of cloudless weather, your chances of seeing the heavenly show are highest - every three nights out of four, in the Sodankyla area - every second night, and in the vicinity of Oulu - every fourth.

The season lasts from August to April, but the best time for “hunting” is September-October and February-March. The cold clear weather is ideal, there should be no clouds in the sky. The best time: from 22.00 until midnight. But there is one difficulty: Aurora Borealis (northern lights) does not appear on schedule, although there are special sites where you can find something like a short-term forecast - what is the probability that there will be northern lights in the current day: Space Weather от NASA (http://www.spaceweather.com), apps for smartphones.

The more time you spend outdoors, the more opportunities you have to see Aurora Borealis. Magical flashes appear as suddenly as they disappear, at any moment from dusk to dawn. The northern lights are so bright that it illuminates the snow-covered tundra for kilometers around.
