The rescued captured sailors from the sunken Kriegsmarine German U-175 submarine sitting on the deck of the Spencer US Coast Guard Ship (USCGC Spencer), and the fire which destroyed the submarine. Of the 54 crew members of U-175 submarine, 13 people were killed and 41 others were raised on board the “Spencer” and saved.
After the captured sailors pulled from the water, their wet clothes replaced with warm blankets, were treated to coffee, brandy and cigarettes; Soon they were also fed hot food.
