Что входит в понятие «nursery rhymes»? Это различные стихи, песенки, загадки, колыбельные, считалочки для малышей. Дословно на русский язык термин переводится, как «детские рифмы». Запоминаются произведения легко и, действительно, рифмуются отлично.
Через nursery rhymes ребенок пополняет свой словарный запас и учится распознавать на слух слова с похожим звучанием. Повторение, ритм помогают быстрее осваивать новые языковые конструкции. Кроме того, чтение стишков и совместное пение – это интерактивная деятельность. Они вносят разнообразие и удовольствие в образовательный процесс.
Однако не каждый придуманный детский текст входит в понятие «nursery rhymes». Стихи/песенки должны быть не только легкими для детского восприятия, но и «старыми», «традиционными» и, главное, хорошо известными. Например, фольклорные произведения, которые передавались из поколения в поколение. Так первые стихотворения, потешки и песни относятся даже к XVI–XVII векам. Современные английские nursery rhymes могут быть и авторскими произведениями, которые стали настолько популярными, что обрели народную славу.

2. Humpty Dumpty (1797 г.).
В 1996 году на сайте туристического центра г. Колчестер была опубликована статья, в которой говорилось о том, что стихотворение Шалтай-болтай связано с пушкой, используемой монархистами во время Гражданской войны в Англии 1648 г. Оружие, под названием «Humpty-Dumpty» было прикреплено к стене рядом с храмом Св. Марии в г. Колчестер. В процессе нападения часть стены разрушили, и оружие упало на землю. Монархисты попытались установить «Шалтай-болтая» в другом месте, но из-за тяжести сделать это не смогли.

3. The lion and the unicorn (1603 г.).
Стих возник после союза между Англией и Шотландией и соединения геральдических знаков льва и единорога. На гербе Шотландии изображенные единороги подразумевают щитодержателей. А лев — геральдический символ Англии.

Как персонаж Матушка гусыня появилась в песне, которая теперь в сокращенном варианте используется как детский стишок. В то время это имя было связано с ведьмами, которые были частью рождественской пантомимы. Этот образ до сих пор можно встретить на Рождество в Соединенном Королевстве.
