In my family heirloom isn't a thing but a house. My great-grandfather and his family bought it and moved to when people started to abandon his current village. It's a big house heated by furnace. There is a large kitchen garden behind it.
Great-grandfather owned big household with livestock and agriculture. But in his old age he couldn't make it to take care of animals so they had to get rid of it.
His children grown there and moved to different cities. My grandmother and grandfather were driving there from Yekaterinburg every weekend to help with kitchen garden. And in the end they moved to this house after their retirement. They re-planned the house: teared down the furnace, moved inner walls and installed gas heating.
And now my parents visit my grandfather almost every weekend. I expect one day they'll move there too and my turn will come :)
