Margaret's story
In this article I want to share with you only my opinion of the beautiful story that Diane Setterfield has written for us.
The second chapter once again reveals to us Margaret, as a girl, that she spends a lot of time in her cocoon. Why? Because she is already tactfully with her eyes closed can tell which floor of the bookshop she is on on the spines of her books. Personally, I find that hard to believe. Her knowledge of all the books on the floors was something of a shock to me. How much time does she spend in this shop? I'm sure that Margaret rarely goes out the door.
Their bookshop looks more like a refuge for hermits than a hobby, as the book says. Although I can't say about her father that he is an introvert and seemed to me closed. He walks around making deals with various interested people, goes to fairs and brings books, adding to the shelves. This man is a hard-working enough. He has a love for his work.
The second chapter tells the whole story of Margaret and her family, their relationship. It is not for nothing that the chapter is called "The Story of Margaret". Her relationship with her father seems ambiguous to me. They are not bad and not good as they could be. Her father has a peculiar manifestation of love. He appreciates his daughter's help, he takes care of her, he brings different books from the fairs, he tries to spend more time with her, but at the same time, he is somehow distant. Maybe it's because their relationship hasn't been revealed in the way it's supposed to be. Although Margaret liked doing business with her dad, spending time with him in silence, reading books and taking care of the library. Every year she took on more and more responsibilities, trying to help her parents, which is very commendable for a child.
The main character's interest in the biographies of long dead people leads me to believe that this girl is living the lives of others, missing out on the valuable and fleeting time that has been given to her personally. She says it is a hobby, but her whole life consists of work (a shop) and the same hobby (biographies of others).
After her story about how she was left home alone and found her sister's birth and death certificates, it was as if the child subconsciously knew that she had a twin who died for some reason. To be honest, it's shocking and strange to me at the same time. Surely knowing that you once had a twin, but he died at an early age, would have caused some kind of horror and fear at once. Personally, this is what I feeling. It gives me the creeps of the body. And the strangest thing about this situation is that after that she started seeing her sister in her reflection all the time. Perhaps this upheaval as a child has had a profound effect on her psyche and has produced such bitter fruits that even in adulthood, the gardener cannot rest. In each reflection, she sees her sister, which she can't help but be frightening.
In general, the second chapter gives me mixed feelings, but she is more likely to scare me than interest me. She is creepy and filled with all kinds of strange events.
