Tips for IELTS Writing and Speaking

Мысль первична… Thoughts are primary!

I always try to provide my students with some food for thought (something to consider) during the lesson or for homework. IELTS course is exactly the MOMENT where your personal thoughts are very much valued and appreciated.

Talking about all 4 aspects of IELTS, 2 of them – Writing and Speaking – definitely require your active production of ideas most. Therefore, these skills are called PRODUCTIVE skills.

Just imagine you are given a topic for an essay or a card for speaking … and all your ideas are gone. Just all of a sudden (i.e. quickly and without warning). Yes, it is true, they never warn you when decide to disappear 😊 This could be the worst scenario for any exam, I must say, especially for such a pricy one as IELTS. The reason is obvious: no relevant thoughts about the topic – no good answer. Consequently, no good score 😞

I personally hate being in such situations because nothing would help you save it. Perfect grammar and advanced vocabulary, RP pronunciation and prolific range of idioms are just waiting … they are waiting for your BRILLIANT ideas to come and shine!

English is very rich in expressions and idioms about thoughts, e.g.:

🥦 Food for thought – something to consider (пища для размышления)

📦 Think out of the box – to think beyond what is considered usual, traditional, or conventional (мыслить нешаблонно)

🤔 (To have) A second thought - a hesitation or concern about (doing) something (сомневаться)

🚂 A train of thought – one’s uninterrupted progression of thinking (поток мыслей)

🥛 A sobering thought - A thought or idea which is dispiriting, depressing, or traumatic (отрезвляющая мысль)

So, friends, please value your thoughts and ideas! They are precious! They are unique! They are who we are.

Да, про идеи и мысли можно писать бесконечно. И пусть они иногда бывают «скакунами», они наше бесценное сокровище. Это именно то, что в итоге и отвечает за ваш балл в IELTS. Это может показаться очень высокопарным суждением, но работая в области TESTING, уверенно подтверждаю его реальность. Но об этом в следующих постах …
